The Best Mattresses for Those With Hip Pain
Hip pain, along with lower back pain, can prevent you from getting a good night's sleep, as falling asleep can be hard when you're spending your time trying to find a position that doesn't aggravate the pain even further.
Some beds don't really help in this regard, and some can make the pain worse. Here, you'll find at least one mattress that can potentially turn your nights into something you anticipate rather than dread, and may even remedy your hip for a better, more comfortable life.

The Bear Elite Hybrid is built specifically for people who require better cooling and muscle recovery capabilities, which is evident right from its top cover: a breathable hand-quilted cushioned cover with PCM (phase change material) which actively cools you, and Celliant fiber, which converts your body heat into FIR (far infrared radiation), and then reflect it back at the body to encourage faster muscle recovery (by triggering oxygenation and vasodilation in your circulatory system).
The support layer under the top cover is also a copper-infused memory foam that is both antimicrobial and heat wicking. Together with the mattress' layer of pocketed coils, which allows for a lot of air to pass through and thus wick more heat away from you, the Elite Hybrid ensures you don't wake up hot and sweaty.
In addition to all this, the Elite Hybrid has fantastic pressure relief qualities, without feeling too cradling, in all its firmness versions. It features a support layer of zoned polyfoam with differing firmness levels so you can get different levels of support for your shoulders, waist and hips. The individual coils also do a great job at contouring to your body's shape for added spinal support.
The Elite Hyprid also feels larger than it is due to its reinforced perimeter of coils and high-density support foam base, which make for fantastic edge support. This allows you to utilize the entire surface area of the bed, even sleeping on its side without feeling like you're about to fall off.
The downside of the Elite Hybrid, though, is that it is quite expensive. the difference between it and most other mattresses on this list is only around $300 or so, but that's still something to consider.
The Bear Elite Hybrid comes in three firmness levels that range from Medium to Firm.

If you're heavyweight and suffer from a bad hip, then the Saatva HD may be just the thing you're looking for. It has fantastic pressure relief qualities, and while some side sleepers will feel like its too firm for them, it's nevertheless designed to suit most sleepers, and plus-sized sleepers in particular, regardless of weight, body shape and preferred sleeping position.
The Saatva brand is well-known for its luxurious and hypoallergenic mattresses, and the HD is no different, It is made of materials that don't cause any allergic reactions or even repel allergens, such as dust mites, mold and microbes.
The mattress is also great for couples who like to get intimate, as its bouncy and firm nature facilitates better ease of movement. It is, however, less than great for couples who are looking for low motion transfer. The Saatva HD may not have the worst motion isolation out there, but it's definitely mediocre.
The biggest deterrent for getting this mattress, though, is its price. The Saatva HD is a luxury mattress — it looks and feels like one, and it's also prices accordingly. It costs around a grand more than most mattresses on this list, so many will prefer to simply purchase a mattress that costs much less (though that is problematic when trying to find one that can also support heavy people). Ultimately, the Saatva HD is worth it, but only if you don't break the bank getting it.
If you do, though, delivery professionals will carry it directly to your bedroom, where they will unpack it (it comes as it is, not compressed and so doesn't need to off-gas) and even remove your old mattress if you ask them to. This white glove delivery is completely free, and befitting of such a luxury product.
The Saatva HD only comes in a Medium-Firm firmness level, but mostly suits all sleeping positions for both heavyweight and lightweight sleepers.

If we're on the subject of pressure relief, then the WinkBeds GravityLux simply cannot be ignored. The gel-infused polyfoam quilted into the mattress' cover gives its top a adequate plushness, while the memory foam layer underneath it provides phenomenal contouring, shaping to your body to take pressure off your hips and shoulders. Beneath that, zoning prevents excessive sinkage around your midsection, which balances the GravityLux’s strong contouring with enough support to keep your back aligned throughout your sleep.
This memory foam mattress also surprised me with the amount of heat wicking it has, since most foam mattresses tend to retain heat. The mattress also isolates motion extremely well, but that is expected from a memory foam mattress. On the WinkBeds GravityLux, you'll be bothered neither by hot nights nor by a restless partner.
You will, however, have a bit of an issue changing positions on it in its softer versions. It is, after all, an all-foam mattress, and, as such, has great contouring and isn't very bouncy. If you want to use this mattress for more than sleep but know that only its soft version will suit your body and sleeping position, then know that it will tire you faster than a hybrid mattress when you're being intimate with your partner.
The GravityLux also lacks great edge support due to not having a reinforced perimeter, so it can feel smaller than it actually is. If you're planning on purchasing it, think about whether you like to roll to the edge of the bed every now and again to, for instance, sleep with one hand dangling down. If you do, then you may be among the few who will be bothered by this.
If you decide to purchase the GravityLux, keep in mind that it will arrive in only 3-5 days, which tends to surprise some people who don't read the fine print. So, don't purchase it while away from your place of residency, since shipping tends to be hasty.
The WinkBeds GravityLux comes in three firmness levels that range from Soft to Firm.

The Nectar Premier's motion isolation qualities rival that of the WinkBeds GravityLux', which says a lot. This all-foam memory mattress has fantastic pain-relieving qualities, is hugging and comforting, and an absolute marvel at minimizing pressure to your shoulders and hips - especially while you sleep on your side or back.
The edge support of the Premier is about the same as that of the GravityLux', as is its ease of movement. If you find yourself waking up on the edge of the bed more than not, and you want a mattress that's fantastic for rigorous intimate activities, then you should probably consider the other mattresses on this list more than this one, though.
The other qualities of the mattress are pretty fair. It has better heat wicking than you'd expect from an all-foam mattress, and even comes with a lifetime warranty, making it a great deal in the long run.
But, what makes it an even better deal is its base price. The Nectar Premier is the most low-cost mattress on this list, and, on top of that, Nectar also offers generous discounts all year long.

If there's one this that the Brooklyn Bedding Aurora excels at other than pressure relief, it's cooling. The mattress rivals the Bear Elite Hybrid in terms of heat wicking, and, in my opinion, even slightly surpasses it in this regard (though, frankly, most won't notice a difference). It's also a bit cheaper than the Elite Hybrid, so if you're looking for an affordable, pain-relieving and cooling mattress, then this is probably your best option.
The Aurora excels in pretty much every important aspect I've discussed so far; apart from the great pressure relief qualities it gets from its hybrid nature and zoned pocketed coils and its exemplary cooling due to the inclusion of PCM and copper in its top layers, the Aurora also has above-average edge support due to its high-density polyfoam encasement, and even some good motion isolation properties.
The mattress also excels in moments of intimacy, providing enough bounce and ease of movement to allow you to switch positions with ease. This, as always, changes with the firmness of the mattress, with the softer versions providing more sink and thus less bounce and ease of movement.
The Brooklyn Aurora does have an off-gassing odor that takes a few days to disappear after unpacking, but it's not much of an issue.
The Brooklyn Bedding Aurora comes in three firmness levels that range from Medium-Soft to Medium-Firm.

How We Rate the Best Mattresses for Hip Pain
Whether a bed will help relieve your back pain depends a lot on your preferred sleeping positions, as well as on your body's shape and weight. If you sleep on a bed that doesn't suit you it won't only fail to help with your hip pain, but may actually cause it, even if you had no pain or no underlying cause for it. After all, the average person spends about a third of their day in bed, so it's one of the most important factors for the health of a person's joints, including their waist and hips.
For instance, side sleepers need softer mattresses, back and stomach sleepers need firmer mattresses, and combination sleepers need something in-between. For a side sleeper, this is because their sleeping position focuses more of their weight on their shoulders and hips, which become pressure points that need to sink into the mattress for the spine to remain in a neutral (straight) position.
In contrast, when sleeping on your back, and especially when sleeping on your stomach, a soft mattress will cause your center of mass (usually, the chest for men and hips for women) to sink further into the mattress than the rest of their body, which prevents your spine from keeping a neutral position. A combo sleeper, though, needs a mattress that will allow their pressure points to sink, but won't cause their center of mass to sink further than their full body when they're on their back or stomach.
All of the above can cause lower back pain, which can radiate to your hips. What's more is that your body shape and weight can greatly contribute to these factors. Heavier people tend to sink further into their mattress, and so need a firmer mattress to balance that out. Meanwhile, curvier people need their hips and shoulders to sink even further into their mattress, and so need either a softer mattress or one with softer upper layers that allow for more sink. Heavyweight curvy people therefore require specialized mattresses.
Finally, hip pain can be greatly reduced by a mattress with good pressure relief. Your hips, along with your shoulders, are a main pressure point when laying down. A mattress with good pressure relief can disperse your weight and support it so your hips don't experience much pressure as you sleep.
Because of these reasons, I mention each mattress' firmness, along with their main strengths, and only include mattresses with top-notch pressure relief. Do note that all mattresses on this list are made with no harmful materials, and do not off-gas any harmful substances.
Conclusion
There's a mattress here for every sleeper, and if you suffer from hip pain, you can most likely find something here that will greatly help relieve it. Just make sure to purchase a mattress that suits your preferred sleeping positions, weight and body shape, as, more than anything, these are the factors that most contribute to how well a mattress can help you with pain relief.
How can I try out these mattresses?
There's a button at the bottom of each mattress appraisal that will redirect you to the mattress company's website, where you can purchase it at a discount. Each of these companies let you try out the mattress for a few months and either keep it or return it for a full refund (though some of them charge a small fee for retrieval). In this way, you can try out any of these mattresses, see if it's to your liking, and return it if it's not.
What are the warranties on these mattresses?
Most of these companies offer at least a 10-year warranty that covers any damage done to the mattress not by misuse or negligence, though some offer a lifetime warranty. You can read the review of the mattress by clicking it's company's logo for more details.
Do these mattresses come in a box?
Most online mattresses do, and thus require a day to decompress and off-gas, preferably in a well-ventilated space. Saatva mattresses, however, come as they are, and shipped by professionals directly to your bedroom, and therefore don't need to decompress or off-gas.
Do these mattresses come with a foundation?
No, unless you order one along with them. Most of these mattresses are compatible with standard bed bases, and you can always purchase a foundation from the company website. Check my mattress reviews and their company websites for more details on compatible bases and your options.
Where can these mattresses be shipped to?
These companies currently only ship to the contiguous United States, not including Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, Guam, etc. They do, however, usually ship to Alaska and Hawaii for an additional fee.
Can they remove my existing mattress when the new one is delivered?
Some companies, like Saatva, do so at no additional cost, though most don't offer this service. Check a mattress' review or its company site for more information in this regard.
