The Big Fig Mattress Review

Last updated December 17, 2024

The Big Fig is a hybrid mattress designed from the start for plus-size people. It can support up to 1,100 pounds of sleepers' weight. To do that, it relies on an architecture of hardened foam and steel coils. A comfort layer made of responsive latex provides pleasant bounciness, which may appeal to medium-weight sleepers as well.

The Big Fig Mattress Video Review

Mattress Construction

The Big-Fig is 13'' high. It consists of 6 layers of different types of foam and coils. This composition enables the mattress to be responsive to sleepers' weight while at the same time remaining firm enough to keep their body supported in proper alignment.

The layers of the Big Fig mattress

Cover: 1'' of soft fabric made of 66% flexible polyurethane, 30% soft and breathable viscose and 4% lycra with a gel material, which provides contouring and dissipates body heat.

Comfort Layer: 0.5'' of gel-infused highly ventilated latex enabling effective moisture wicking and cooling as well as providing the mattress with bounciness.

Transition Layer: Three 1'' layers of hardened poly foam at increasing density level ranging from 1.8 lb to 2.5 lb. These layers generate lift and prevent over-sinking.

Support Layer: 1,600 7'' individually wrapped pocketed coils giving the mattress firm support and decreasing heat retention by enabling free flow of air.

Edge Support Layer: 3'' of dense poly foam (1.8 lb) surrounding the coil layer providing the mattress with improved perimeter support.

Base Layer: 1.5'' of hardened poly foam meant to support the coils as they compress.

Feel

If you're looking for a melting-into-the-bed sensation, the Big Fig isn't the right choice for you. It isn't a contouring mattress. The foam it consists of is dense and, together with the coils, is designed for holding heavyweight sleepers. Therefore, the most obvious feel you'll get once you lie on the mattress is firmness and stability.

Having said that, the gel in the cover layer and the elastic latex in the comfort layer below balance the mattress firmness adding some softness and bounciness. The polyurethane fabric of which the cover is made gives a smooth silk-like feel and keeps the surface of the mattress cool to the touch.

Pressure Relief

Lightweight sleepers of all types will find the Big Fig to be too firm to alleviate pressure points in their body. They'll require a more contouring mattress.

Average weight back sleepers won't feel comfortable on the Big Fig as well. The polyurethane and the latex in the cover and comfort layers are not soft enough for them to counter the hardened foam in the transition layer and, so, pressure accumulating in the lumbar area won't be effectively relieved.

Side sleepers usually need a softer mattress to support their hips and shoulder. The Big Fig does it very well for such sleepers who weigh 150-250 pounds.

The same can be said about average weight stomach sleepers. The Big Fig provides them with the support they need in the abdomen to keep their lower back properly aligned. At the same time, the elastic latex in the comfort layer will easily adapt to their body weight generating bounciness and lift vital for mitigating pressure.

The Big Fig is ideal for heavier sleepers whose weight exceeds 250 pounds. The most important thing for them is support so as to prevent over-sinking and resulting back problems. The high-density foam in the transition layer together with the 1,600 coils — which constitute 50% more than the average number of coils found in innerspring mattresses on the market —  are exactly what it takes to keep them stable and enable them a good night sleep.

Motion Isolation

The Big Fig doesn't isolate motion well enough for sleepers who are easily disturbed by their partner's movements at night. True, the coils in the mattress are individually encased, and that reduces motion transfer. However, with bodily responsive latex and a thick transition layer based on dense poly foam, there aren't materials which can effectively absorb the kinetic energy generated by restless sleepers.

Accordingly, if motion isolation is an issue for you, you should opt for a mattress containing softer memory foam. Memory foam mattresses are better at curbing motion transfer.

Repositioning

What the Big Fig lacks in motion isolation it makes up for in ease of movement. The mattress' responsiveness and firmness enable sleeper to change sleeping positions without too much difficulty. This is especially true for heavy sleepers who won't get stuck in the mattress due to excessive sinking.

Edge Support

The Big Fig provides its sleeper with exceptionally good edge support. Its  3'' layer of hardened poly foam placed around the coils is especially designed to support the perimeter. Adding to that the robust steel coils, sleeper of all weights, including the heavier ones, won't experience sagging when lying close to the edge. This will allow them to utilize the entire surface of the mattress with no need to move towards the center.

Heat Retention

The Big Fig also performs well when it comes to keeping sleepers cool at night. The gel infused fabric which covers the mattress and the aerated latex comfort layer do a good job dissipating heat. The free flow of air through the 7'' coils also aids in regulating temperature.

Frame & Foundation

The Big Fig can be placed on any foundation firm enough to support at least 1,220 pounds. The mattress can also be placed directly on the floor.

If you're looking for a strong and reliable platform for your mattress, you should check out the Big Fig Foundation. It consists of 18 solid wood slats, 2.5'' wide each. These slats, together with 2 center rails and 32 side blocks, can support up to 2,000 pounds.

Big Fig Foundation review

The Big Fig foundation is easy to assemble and is backed by a 20-year warranty. Its prices range from $249 for a Twin mattress to $349 for a California King mattress.

If you want the foundation to sit on a frame, you may opt for the The Big Fig Bed Frame. It's made of recycled railroad steel and can hold up to 2,000 pounds. It's sold with a limited lifetime warranty covering items that broke due to defective material or workmanship. The frame costs $150 for all mattress sizes.

It comes with a 10-year warranty. Starting price is $650 for a Twin size mattress. Maximum price is $1099 for a California King mattress.

An Up-Close Look at The Big Fig

Our Mattress Reviewer's Comment

This Big Fig mattress was gifted to a real family, in return for photos, videos, and a personal account. You have seen the media, and now here is how they experienced the mattress, in their own words:

We slept on it for one week and liked it. Then we slept on our old mattress for two days just to be sure we found a better mattress for us. After that we decided we liked the Big Fig a little more. So, we moved the Big Fig back into our bedroom, and out went the old mattress which I was able to sell online.

The edge support is great, and it feels very stable and solid. Finally, we have a mattress that I can plop my self onto without worry that my big ass is going to break something.

~ Ryan from California

The Bottom Line

The Big Fig is the ideal mattress for XL sleepers for the simple reason that it was designed to hold heavy weights. It's made of dense foam and a relatively large number of robust steel coils. It also has a whole layer aimed at providing extra support on the mattress' perimeter.

What is more, since plus-size sleepers tend to sleep hot, the mattress is capable of dissipating heat quite well thanks to the gel in its cover and its aerated latex and coil system.
