Mattress Construction

The Saatva HD is constructed out of thick and durable layers of high quality foam, latex, and steel coils, all of which are engineered to provide a good balance of comfort and support for all sleepers, though for bigger sleepers in particular. The mattress also features hand-tufted finishing which eliminates body impressions and locks its layers in place so they don't shift or wrinkle over time.

A look into the mattress layers of the Saatva HD

Cover layer: A 3" Euro pillow top made of polyurethane foam that's covered in breathable, hypoallergenic organic cotton and treated with Saatva's exclusive Guardian antimicrobial treatment.

Comfort layer: A 1.5" layer of 100% natural latex that goes through a washing process to remove all allergy-causing proteins, making it entirely hypoallergenic. The layer is sectioned into five distinct zones of density to provide enhanced lumbar support and pressure-point relief.

Support layer: A 1.5" layer of foam that's a unique combination of CertiPUR-US certified memory foam (free of harmful materials) and support foam. This layer contours to your body for added pressure-point relief and improved circulation.

Coil layer: A 6" high-durability connected coil unit made of tempered steel coils that are 25% stronger than the industry standard and sandwiched between two 1.5" layers of dense polyurethane foam. It is threaded with helical wire to dramatically lessen motion transfer, and features Saatva's patented spinal zone technology for enhanced lower back support.

Foam encasement: The bottom foam layer of the mattress extends to encase the entirety of its perimeter for firmer edges that prevent sagging, making it easier to get in and out of bed and preventing you from falling off of it.

Feel

The Saatva HD has a medium-firm feel with an average cushioning depth and a fair amount of bounce. It doesn't fully conform to the shape of your body, therefore giving you a feeling of sleeping on top of a mattress rather than in it. The delayed responsiveness of the Saatva HD's memory foam is mostly felt while sleeping on one's side. You'll otherwise feel like the mattress is very responsive and springy.

Pressure Relief

The mattress has excellent pressure relief, even for people who weigh less than 250 lb. The layer of connected coils work better than pocketed coils to support heavy people, while the average cushioning depth and thick upper foam layers do well to cushion their shoulder and hips, even when they sleep on their side.

Motion Isolation

Despite the connected coils, the Saatva HD has pretty low motion transfer. This is mainly due to the helical design of the connecting wire within the coil layer, which connects the coils for added support for heavy sleepers, but still has enough give to allow for parts of the bed to be pressured and move without disturbing the rest of the bed. If you sleep next to a restless partner, this will allow you to sleep through the night without waking much.

Repositioning

If you find it hard to get out of bed in the morning, this mattress will definitely make it less of an issue. The responsiveness and bounciness of the Saatva HD do a great job of helping you more easily reposition and adjust your sleeping position throughout the night. It's also great for intercourse, as moving and changing positions become easier than they would otherwise.

Edge Support

The edge support of the Saatva HD is exceptional. Whether you sit on its edge or sleep near it, the mattress' foam perimeter and general sturdiness do a great job of supporting your weight — even if you weigh more than than 300 pounds.

Heat Retention

Sleeping hot is a common problem for heavy sleepers. The Saatva HD is a hybrid mattress which allows for airflow through its layer of coils. Its foams are also perforated to allow more heat dissipation, and its cover is very breathable. However, the foams above the coil layer are altogether 7" thick, and the entire mattress is encased in a foam perimeter, both of which hinder air circulation and cooling.

Thankfully, the HD doesn't fully conform to your shape, even if you weigh more than 300 lb., which allows more of your body's surface area to stay exposed and dispel heat, allowing you to better regulate your temperature.

Overall, the Saatva HD's cooling capabilities are more than decent. If this is a major concern for you, though, I would suggest you check out the Helix Plus mattress and see if it better suits your needs.

Frame & Foundation

The Saatva HD is unfortunately incompatible with some standard bed foundations, especially ones that are not designed for heavy folk. This means that if you already own a foundation from a previous mattress, you may still need to buy the specialized HD foundation to ensure that your mattress is properly supported. The Saatva HD is also incompatible with adjustable bases due to its thickness and connected coils. You are advised to no let it lay on the floor, as it may damage it over time and reduce its heat-wicking capabilities.

You can purchase the HD foundation for $448 from the official Saatva website. It comes in two heights: 4.75" and 8.75". You can also add a metal frame to the foundation for $119 to lift the mattress 7.5" off the ground.

Additional Details

Saatva usually offers up to $450 in discounts, but that goes up with the size of the purchase. At minimum, you'll receive a $200 discount if you go with the cheapest option. The official Saatva website also offers holiday discounts and even an 18-month payment plan, so you can get a luxury Saatva mattress even if funds are tight at the moment.

In addition to this discount, Saatva offers a $225 discount off orders of $1,000 or more to active military, veterans, first responders, and teachers. To apply for the discount, you'll need to click on the "Discount for Military, First Responders, and Teachers" box at checkout when purchasing the mattress. You'll then be prompted to register with ID.me to verify your status and receive the discount.

Shipping & Delivery

The Saatva HD mattress is built to order before being hand delivered to your bedroom, where the delivery professionals will also set it up for you. If the mattress can't fit up your staircase, Saatva will exchange it for one of a different size or height, or take it back at no charge to you and issue a refund with only a $99 charge that covers the cost of labor and gas for the delivery. If you have an older bed you want to get rid off, the delivery professionals can do that for you at no additional cost.

Unlike other online mattress companies, Saatva doesn't sell compressed mattresses. There will be no need to wait for the HD mattress to decompress or off-gas, so you can use it immediately upon its arrival.

The mattress takes about 3 weeks to arrive from the date of purchase due to the custom nature of each order. You will get a call from the delivery company the day before your chosen delivery date. If you need to cancel, you won’t be charged a fee. The mattress can be shipped anywhere within the contiguous United States for free. Saatva currently does not ship directly to Hawaii or Alaska. If you live in one of these areas, you can contact Saatva's help center at 877-672-2882 for help scheduling a special delivery through a freight forwarder in Seattle or California. Saatva has unfortunately stopped all deliveries across the border to Canada due to the damage the Covid-19 pandemic has done to its supply chain.

Returns & Warranty

You can try out the Saatva HD for 180 nights, and if you don't like it and you decide to replace it before the end of this period, you may do so for only $99. This is a labor and transport fee, as Saatva delivery professionals will come and pick up the mattress from your bedroom for you.

Saatva offers a 20-year warranty for its HD mattress. If the mattress is deemed defective and returned within the first 2 years after purchase, it will be replaced with a brand new one. If it is returned after this time, it will instead be repaired for $198 (covers the total cost of shipment both ways).

There is an additional warranty option, called the "Fairness Replacement Option". You will be sent a mattress of the same model for a fraction of how much the old one cost you, based on the age of the mattress: 40% of what you paid if the mattress was purchased 3-5 years ago, 60% of what you paid if the mattress was purchased 5-10 years ago, or 80% of what you paid if the mattress was purchased 11-20 years ago.

You will also be charged $99 for shipping. You can keep the old mattress, so if its state isn't too bad, it is a great option for using in your guest room, or you can donate it to a charity of your choice. This option is only available once per customer. This warranty is only valid to the original purchaser, and will be voided if the mattress is misused, such as sleeping on it without a foundation while it rests on the floor, or using it with an adjustable base. The warranty doesn't cover damage done to it through negligence, such as burns or spills.

The Bottom Line

If you're looking for a high-quality luxury mattress for a person who weighs more than 250 pounds who likes to be comfortable in every sleeping position, then this is the perfect mattress for you. With Saatva's generous trial and shipping, returns, and warranty policies, this mattress is one of the safest purchases you can make. It may be expensive, but with Saatva's discounts and payment program, it could very well be affordable to you, and one of the best investments you'll make.

FAQ

Where are Saatva mattresses made?

All Saatva mattresses are made according to order in the USA.

How long are trials with Saatva mattresses?

Saatva provides a 180 night trial period to test out your mattress. Refunds incur a $99 fee.

How does Saatva ship my mattress?

All Saatva orders come with white glove delivery services, which means that professionals will deliver the mattress to your house and even to your chosen bedroom. If requested, they will even dispose of your old mattress.

What should I put my Saatva HD mattress on?

The Saatva HD isn't compatible with slatted bed frames and regular foundations and box springs. You are advised to purchase the Saatva HD foundation, which is designed to be paired with the HD mattress and support heavy sleepers.

Should I flip the HD mattress to prolong its lifespan?

No. The Saatva HD is designed with strict bottom and top portions. If you flip it, it won't be comfortable to sleep on, and it will slowly damage the mattress. If you wish to prolong its lifespan, you should instead rotate the mattress every 6 months or so.

Does the Saatva need a few hours to decompress or release gasses?

Saatva mattresses aren't compressed and don't come in a box. They therefore don't need to decompress or off-gas.
