Mattress Construction

The layers of the Saatva Solaire are made of eco-friendly an hypoallergenic materials. It is constructed in such a way as to give both you and your partner your own customizable comfort level, and is thus great for couples with differing tastes in mattress firmness.

A look into the mattress layers of the Saatva Solaire

Cover layer: The cover of the Solaire mattress is a Euro pillow top featuring Saatva's patented Lumbar Zone Quilting, which gives you more support in the center third of the mattress where you need it most. The cover is made with naturally breathable organic cotton to promote cooler sleep, and is treated with Saatva's trademarked Guardin botanical antimicrobial treatment, which inhibits the growth of bacteria, mold, and mildew.

First layer: This 1" layer of ergonomic natural latex increases the mattress' lumbar support and pressure-point relief. It is naturally hypoallergenic, resistant to mold, mildew, and dust mites, and doesn't off-gas.

Second layer: This 2" layer of CertiPUR-US certified gel-infused memory foam contours to your body for pressure-point relief and helps disperse body heat away for cooler sleep.

Third layer: This layer is made of two conjoined moisture barrier layers, which protect the mattress' internal mechanical components to prevent bacterial growth, leading to a longer-lasting mattress.

Fourth layer: This layer is what gives the Solaire its customizable nature. It features no-sink vulcanized air chambers that maintain even firmness throughout the mattress, so you are evenly supported from head to toe.

Base layer: This last layer is a reinforced edge enclosure that provides a stable base for the mattress and houses its quiet air inflator and hoses, so they're out of sight and out of your way.

Feel

The Solaire adjustable mattress features 50 distinct firmness level that can be changed with the press of a button. The remote controllers are attached to the mattress on both sides and allow both you and your partner to adjust the firmness of the mattress to suit your taste. Do note that the mattress only features to distinct firmness sections if the mattress is Queen sized or larger.

While the firmness level can even go to 0, I would not suggest you to set the firmness level below 10, as an empty air chamber pretty much defeats the purpose of the mattress, and is quite uncomfortable. I consider 10 to be the minimum, and gives the mattress a medium-soft feel, while 30 is the average and gives the mattress a medium feel, and 50, which is the highest setting, gives the mattress a medium-firm feel.

The Solaire Customizable has a little bit of surface bounce and is moderately responsive, no matter which firmness level you set it to, thanks to is construction. It's therefore a better fit for those of you who prefer less bouncy beds. The Solaire is also more hugging and cradling than average, especially in the softer setting, and has a distinct memory foam feel, so those of you who prefer your mattress to be on the more plush side of things will enjoy this.

Pressure Relief

Surprisingly, the Solaire's pressure-point relief doesn't vary much depending on your chosen firmness. This is because most of the pressure relief qualities of the mattress come from its foam and latex layers, and not from its air chambers.

Overall, though, the Solaire has great pressure-point relief qualities, and can support sleepers in a wide range of weights across all sleeping positions.

Motion Isolation

The Solaire has almost not motion transfer due to its split air chambers layer. This is absolutely the bed to get if you or your partner are restless sleepers, or if one of you is a light sleeper who is easily awoken.

Repositioning

The ease of repositioning on the Solaire is pretty high across all 50 of its firmness levels, but it does increase the more the air chambers are inflated. If you find it hard to switch positions during sleep or in moments of intimacy, I suggest you inflate the mattress to its maximum firmness or to a level close to it.

As a side note, even when the two sides are inflated to completely different softness levels, repositioning is easy from one side to the other, and the divide is barely felt.

Edge Support

The edge support of the Solaire mattress is very good, allowing you to use the entirety of its surface area without fear of falling off of it.

Heat Retention

While the Solaire features several technologies that increase its heat dissipation, it is still not the best on the market in this regard due to the limited airflow through the mattress' third layer (its moisture barrier). It is effective enough in this regard for it not to be an issue for most, but if you sleep hot and its a problem for you, you may be better off with a different mattress, such as the Nectar Premier Copper.

Frame & Foundation

The Saatva Solaire is compatible with most foundations, box springs, and platform beds, so if you already own a foundation and are looking to simply replace your mattress, you can place your new Solaire mattress on your old foundation.

But, if you want to purchase a new foundation to go along with your new premium mattress, you can do so on the Saatva online store. The standard Saatva foundation costs $209-$418 (depending on the size of the mattress). The foundation is a wood slat designed to look seamless with your Saatva mattress. It comes in two height options (either 4.75″ or 8.75″) so you can better adjust it to your needs. You can add to that a metal frame for $119 that will lift your bed setup 7.5" off the ground, giving you more storage room beneath the bed.

You can also purchase a designer foundation and frame from the Saatva store. This is mainly for decorative purposes, but they are nevertheless incredibly well-made and luxurious, and can add a lot to the aesthetic of your room. There are around a dozen designer foundations to choose from, each one with their own style and price tag, so check the online store if you're in the market for such a thing.

Lastly, you can also purchase Saatva's Lineal Adjustable Bed Base for $1,299-$2,598 (depending on the models and size of the mattress). This adjustable foundation will allow you to elevate the bed's head and feet sections, and includes full-body massage capabilities along with underbed illumination.

Additional Details

Saatva usually offers up to $450 in discounts, but that goes up with the size of the purchase. At minimum, you'll receive a $250 discount if you go with the cheapest option and refrain from adding anything else to the purchase.

In addition to this, Saatva offers a $225 discount off orders of $1,000 or more to active military, veterans, first responders, and teachers. To apply for the discount, you'll need to click on the "Discount for Military, First Responders, and Teachers" box at checkout when purchasing the mattress. You'll then be prompted to register with ID.me to verify your status and receive the discount.

Shipping & Delivery

The Saatva Solaire mattress is built to order before being hand delivered to your bedroom, where delivery professionals will set it up for you if you so request. Saatva maintains minimum handling of your mattress by human hands. If you have an older bed you want to get rid off, the delivery professionals can do that for you at no additional cost. If the mattress can't fit up your staircase, Saatva will exchange it for one that will, or take it back and issue a refund with only a $99 charge that covers the cost of labor and gas for the delivery.

Unlike other online mattress companies, Saatva doesn't sell compressed mattresses. Since a Saatva mattress isn't a bed-in-a-box, there will be no need to wait for the Solaire mattress to decompress or off-gas, so you can use it immediately upon its arrival.

The mattress takes up to 3 weeks to arrive from the date of purchase due to the custom nature of each order. You will get a call from the delivery company the day before your chosen delivery date. You won’t be charged a fee if you cancel the order, even during this call. The mattress can be shipped anywhere within the contiguous US for free. If you live in Hawaii or Alaska, you can contact Saatva's help center at 877-672-2882 for help scheduling a special delivery through a freight forwarder. Saatva has unfortunately stopped all deliveries across the border to Canada due to the damage the Covid-19 pandemic has done to its supply chain.

Returns & Warranty

Once you purchase the Solaire, you can try it out for 180 nights. If you don't like it and you decide to replace it before the end of that period, you may do so at any point for only $99. This is a labor and transport fee, as Saatva delivery professionals will come and pick up the mattress from your bedroom for you.

Saatva offers a very generous 25-year warranty for its Solaire mattress, which covers all parts for the first 5 years and all labor for the first 15 years. Here is a breakdown for the years following the delivery of the Solaire, and what is covered in case the mattress is deemed defective:

  • Up to 5th year: The mattress will be professionally repaired at absolutely no cost to you.
  • During years 6–10: You are responsible for 50% of the cost of the part(s) and related processing. Saatva will cover 100% of the labor costs involved.
  • During years 11–15: You are responsible for 75% of the cost of the part(s) and related processing. Saatva will cover 100% of the labor costs involved.
  • During years 16–20: You are responsible for labor and processing costs related to receiving and installation of the new part(s) and 85% of the cost of the part(s).
  • During years 21–25: You are responsible for labor and processing costs related to receiving and installation of the new part(s) and 90% of the cost of the part(s).

There is an additional warranty option, called the "Fairness Replacement Option". You will be sent a mattress of the same model for a fraction of how much the old one cost you, based on the age of the mattress: 50% of what you paid if the mattress was purchased 6-10 years ago, or 75% of what you paid if the mattress was purchased 11-25 years ago. You will also be charged $99 for shipping, and you'll be able to keep the old mattress. This option is only available once per customer.

A warranty by Saatva is only valid to the original purchaser, and will be voided if the mattress is misused or neglected, such as if the mattress was regularly used without a foundation or is damaged from burns or spills.

An Up-Close Look at The Saatva Solaire

The Bottom Line

If you have the funds for it, the Saatva Solaire is one of the best investments you can make. It suits most sleepers out there due to its customizable nature, and its generous 25-year warranty makes it a fantastic bed for the long term.

Featuring top-end comfort, pressure relief, motion isolation, and customizability, the Saatva Solaire may be expensive, but it is perhaps one of the best luxury mattresses you can get for a reasonable price.

Saatva provides a 180 night trial period to test out your mattress. Refunds incur a $99 fee.

How does Saatva ship my mattress?

All Saatva orders come with white glove delivery services, which means that professionals will deliver the mattress to your house and even to your chosen bedroom. If requested, they will even dispose of your old mattress.

What should I put my Saatva Solaire mattress on?

The Saatva Solaire is compatible with standard foundation and adjustable bases. If you lack a suitable foundation, you can get one from the Saatva store along with the mattress.

No. The Saatva Solaire is designed with strict bottom and top portions. If you flip it, it won't be comfortable to sleep on, and it will slowly damage the mattress. If you wish to prolong its lifespan, you should instead rotate the mattress every 6 months or so.

Does the Saatva need a few hours to decompress or release gasses?

Saatva mattresses aren't compressed and don't come in a box. They therefore don't need to decompress or off-gas.
