Mattress Construction

The Puffy original is 10'' high except for the California King size, which has a height of 12''. The mattress consists of a cover and four consecutive layers of different types of foam designed to contour sleepers' body and deliver support.

The layers of the Puffy Original mattress

Cover: Soft breathable and moisture wicking polyester fabric. The fabric is stain resistant helping you keep the mattress clean.

Comfort Layer: 2" of Cooling Cloud gel-infused memory foam, which cradles the body. The gel disperses excess heat.

Transition Layer: 2" of Climate Comfort medium density (28 ILD) poly foam designed to conform to sleepers' body while preventing over-sinking. Being aerated, the foam reduces heat retention.

Support Layer: 6'' of high density (32 ILD) poly foam generating lift and reducing sinkage.

Base Cover: Resilient polyester fabric which keeps the mattress immobile on any flat surface.

Feel

The soft polyester cover fabric gives a smooth silk-like feel. It's breathability assists in wicking warm air and moisture cooling and drying the surface of the mattress.

The Puffy Original has a medium feel. Its memory foam in the comfort layer molds to sleepers' body providing a pleasant melting-into-the-bed sensation. The medium density poly foam in the transition layer and the hardened foam in the support layer work in tandem to reduce sinkage and avert a quicksand effects. This enables sleepers to be hugged by the malleable memory foam while still feeling stable lying on the mattress.

Pressure Relief

The Puffy Original is a great fit for side sleepers of all weights. The conforming memory foam in the comfort layer will target the sensitive areas in their body, the hips and shoulders in particular, alleviating pressure. The medium density poly foam in the transition layer will elevate their midsection keeping their spine properly aligned. Lastly, the hardened foam in the support layer will reduce sinkage especially when it comes to the heavier sleepers.

Back sleepers who weigh up to 250 pounds will also like the Puffy Original. The soft memory foam will cushion their lumbar and thoracic back mitigating pressure. The medium density poly foam in the transition layer will support these sections of their spine making sure they remain straight. The higher density poly foam in the support layer will assist the transition layer by generating extra lift.

Back sleepers whose weight exceeds 250 pounds will require a more robust mattress which will be able to cope with their massive body. Lying on the Puffy Original, they'll most likely suffer from excess sagging, discomfort and pain.

Lightweight stomach sleepers will feel comfortable on the Puffy Original. The malleable memory foam will wrap their abdomen relieving pressure in their lumbar back. The transition and support layer will lift the area below their rib cage and enable them to maintain a healthy sleeping position.

Average and heavyweight stomach sleepers won't get the support they need from the Puffy Original. Its medium firmness level isn't enough to prevent their waist line and hips from sinking too deeply into the mattress. This sinkage may throw their spine out of its natural alignment and may result in curvature disorders in the long run.

Motion Isolation

Motion isolation is the Puffy Original's strong point. The soft and slow responding memory foam and the medium density poly foam below absorb most of the kinetic energy generated by sleepers' movements. In addition, the lack of coils prevents vibrations and motion transfer across the mattress. Practically speaking, the mattressl will enable sleepers to enjoy quiet nights even if their partners tend to sleep restlessly.

Repositioning

Unlike motion isolation, repositioning is the Puffy Original's Achilles heel. The two upper layers of conforming memory foam and medium density foam respond slowly to sleepers' movements and trap them in bed. To release themselves from this 'entrapment', sleepers will need to exert greater effort compared to much bouncier latex or latex and coils mattresses. This makes repositioning quite difficult especially for plus-size people who will plunge more deeply into the mattress.

Edge Support

The Puffy Original has above-average edge support. Two consecutive medium and high density poly foam layers make the edges relatively stabler compared to many other all-foam mattresses. Having said that, sleepers weighing more than 250 pounds may experience sagging lying away from the center. As a result, their sleeping space will diminish.

Heat Retention

The designers of the Puffy Original did their best to increase the mattress' capacity for reducing heat retention. Its breathable polyester cover wicks away warm air. The gel in the memory foam prevents the accumulation of hot spots under sleepers' body. The aerated poly foam in the transition layer further aids in cooling the mattress.

Having said that, the sinkable memory foam in the comfort layer tends to trap a large amount of heat despite the mitigating effect of the gel. As result, people who tend to sleep hot may not feel comfortable lying on the mattress, especially if they live in hot and humid areas. They may require a mattress which can better regulate temperature.

Frame & Foundation

You can put your new Puffy Original on any foundation, frame or adjustable base which can support its weight. You can even put it on the floor, though it's not recommended as it'll collect dust and bacteria and prevent air circulation. The Puffy company manufactures and sells its own sleep platforms.

The Puffy Foundation is a solid steel construct capable of carrying up to 1,000 pounds. It's easy to assemble and squeak free. Its shipped for free and sold with a 101-night trial and a lifetime warranty. Its prices range from $179 for a Twin size mattress to $269 for a California King mattress.

The Puffy Bed Frame is a wooden slat bed. It's covered with a grey soft cloth, which gives it a modern look. It also comes with a soft fabric and padded headboard making it comfortable for sleepers who like to watch TV or read in bed. The frame can quickly and easily be assembled, and it's squeak free. It's shipped at zero cost, comes with a 101-night trial and is backed by a lifetime warranty. Its minimum price is $899 for a Full mattress (it doesn't fit Twin and Twin XL sizes) and $1,099 for a California King mattress.

The Puffy Adjustable Base has head and foot tilt. It designed for all types of mattresses. It features a wireless remote, a universal customizable headboard mount, zero-g elevation, 3-speed, dual independent massage motors and dual USB charging ports. The base's legs are available in 5 different height options with a maximum of 11.5'' for extra storage space.

Like the Puffy Foundation and Frame, the Puffy Adjustable Base is shipped for free and sold with 101-night trial and a lifetime warranty. Prices vary between $1,199 for a Twin XL mattress and $2099 for a Split King mattress. The base isn't available for Twin and California King sizes.

Additional Details

Puffy is a California-based company. Apart from the Puffy Original, it offers two additional mattresses — the Puffy Lux and the Puffy Royal. It also manufactures and sells bed frames (discussed above) and a variety of bedroom accessories. All these products are 100% American made.

The Puffy Original, like all of the other company's mattresses, is CertiPUR-US certified, which indicates its foam doesn't contain ozone depleters, PBDEs, TDCPP or TCEP (“Tris”) flame retardants, formaldehyde, phthalates, heavy metals and any other materials which may risk sleepers' health or harm the environment.

Shipping and Delivery

The Puffy Original will reach your doorstep sealed in plastic, rolled and compressed in a box in 2-7 business days. You'll have to set up the mattress by yourself as the company doesn't provide white glove delivery. The mattress is shipped to any US state, including Hawaii and Alaska, free of charge.

Returns & Warranty

The Puffy Original comes with a 101-night trial and a break in period of 14 nights. That is to say, in case you're not satisfied with the mattress, you can return it and get a full refund after you slept on it no less than 14 nights and no more than 101 nights. Customers living in Alaska and Hawaii will have to pay for shipping in case they decide to return the mattress. Returned mattresses are donated to charity.

The Puffy Original is backed by a lifetime warranty. The warranty applies to the original buyer only and it covers the following:

  • impressions on the surface of the mattress deeper than 1.5'' as long as they haven't been caused by improper use
  • manufacturing flaw in the cover zipper not including breakage
  • physical flaw in the cover (e.g. fabric tearing or stitching unraveling), which hasn't occurred due to neglecting or abusing the mattress

The warranty doesn't cover normal wear and tear, accidental damage (such as stains, tears and burns), changing firmness preferences, allergies or sensitivities to the mattress' materials, damage caused by children, animals or rodents and naturally occurring aromas.

The warranty may become void in case the mattress wasn't bought from Puffy or from one of its authorized distributors, if the mattress is ill-treated and if it's placed on an inappropriate or insufficiently supportive foundation.

An Up-Close Look at The Puffy Mattress

The Bottom Line

The Puffy original is a great choice for sleepers who like the deep contouring characteristics of all-foam mattresses. This contouring promises enhanced comfort, improved pressure relief and excellent motion isolation.

Yet with the advantages come disadvantages. The lack of coils reduces the mattress' bounce and makes repositioning more difficult. Foam also tends to retain more heat than latex and hybrid mattresses. All in all, it's up to you to decide what's important to you and what isn't and make your decisions accordingly.

FAQ

Where is the Puffy Original manufactured?

Like all of Puffy's mattresses, the Puffy Original is manufactured in the USA.

How do I set up the Puffy Original?

How do I clean the the Puffy Original?

The cover of the Puffy Original is stain resistant. It can be cleaned with all standard household cleaners.
