Naturepedic 2-in-1 Organic Kids Waterproof Mattress Review

Last updated December 15, 2024

The Naturepedic 2-in-1 Organic Kids Waterproof mattress is quite the bargain for its price. It's an organic, hypoallergenic mattress made from the safest, most natural and eco-friendly materials available, and is designed to accompany your child from early toddlerhood on through to adolescence. It's also flippable, with one side being waterproof for the common early age bed-wetting, and the other side is quilted and soft for more grown up and heavier kids.

A review of the Naturepedic 2-in-1 Organic Kids Waterproof mattress

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Fits toddlers as well as teens
  • Flippable, with one water-proof side
  • Competitively priced
  • Made from only natural, organic materials

Cons

  • Not the most suited for co-sleeping

Mattress Construction

The Naturepedic 2-in-1 mattress has a hybrid design. It is made from six layers of foam and springs, all made from organic materials found in nature. As its name implies, you can flip the mattress to its second side once your child has grown enough and wants a softer side to sleep on.

A look into the mattress layers of the Naturepedic 2-in-1

1&5. Quilted sides: Made from a soft-to-the-touch PLA comfort layer covered with quilted organic cotton fabric. The PLA is a synthetic fiber made from non-GMO sugarcane, and is entirely plant-based.

2&4. Coils foam barrier: A 1" layer of organic cotton foam used to add some padding before the coils layer, so they won't be felt and to make the mattress more sinky and less springy. The two identical foam layer sandwich the layer of coils to protect it from both sides and separate it from the surface layers.

3. Coils layer: A 6" innerspring unit that gives the mattress its pressure relief qualities and firm-to-medium-firm feel. The contouring support provided by this layer helps your child fall asleep and stay asleep.

6. Waterproof cover: This mattress is among the rare ones that come with a built-in LDPE waterproof coating made from non-GMO sugarcane without any glues or adhesives. This helps protect the bed against bed-wetting and night sweats. Since this are two things many young toddlers tend to do at night, this side is perfect for any child under the age of 8.

Feel

While Naturepedic advertises this mattress as a Firm, we found that, while its firm for toddlers, it has more of a Medium-Firm feel for grown children (especially on its second side), and more of a Medium feel for any adult that sometimes co-sleeps with their child. Anyone heavier than 150 lbs. may encounter some sagging in the middle of the bed and will probably be able to fill the mattress' springs, as it is not the most suited for adults, especially those who prefer a firm mattress or suffer from any back or hip pain.

While the springs layer make it fairly responsive to pressure, it's not bouncy since the springs are sandwiched between foam layers that cushion them. Since jumping on the bed may be fun but is also dangerous, we see this as a good thing.

Safety and Certifications

The Naturepedic 2-in-1 Organic Kids Waterproof mattress is made from only natural materials. Things like polyurethane foam, flame barriers, adhesives and other chemicals are replaced with healthier organic materials. It will come out smelling somewhat like clay, which, considering most mattresses have an unpleasant chemical smell after unboxing them, is an improvement. This will go away after 4 hours, so it's great for any children who are sensitive to smells.

The materials of the bed are so natural they actually meet food contact standards. The mattress is hypoallergenic, and is Greanguard Gold, GOTS, and MADE SAFE certified, which ensures that it's 100% safe for your child. It emits little to no VOCs thanks to its high-quality natural materials, which are also Organic Exchange OCS100 certified, which ensures that they are authentically and purely organic.

Accident Proofing

Well, you can't ask for much more in this regard. The 2-in-1 Kids mattress is one of the very few kids mattresses out there that are actually waterproof. It also has a not-very-springy design, which prevents your child from hurting themselves jumping on the bed.

Growth Accommodation

Again, you really can't do any much better in this regard than with a flippable mattress. The only downside here is that the two sides aren't as distinct, and so don't accommodate growth and changes in size and mass as well as, say, the Helix Kids mattress does.

Edge Support

While this mattress lacks an actual reinforced edge, its hybrid design and firm feel still give it enough firmness around its edges to make your child secure no matter where on the mattress they sleep.

Heat Retention

The Naturepedic Organic Kids mattress has very good heat dissipation qualities thanks to it having a coils layer through which air can flow, as well as its sides being made from breathable organic cotton and quilted fiber. This is especially true for the waterproof side, as it helps wick away moisture from your child's body and thus help with temperature regulation.

Frame & Foundation

You should not place the mattress as is on the floor, as it will void its warranty and, over time, ruin it. If you don't have a suitable foundation for you bed, Naturepedic sells a suitable one on their site. Naturepedic's Deluxe Organic Bed Foundation comes in two variations: the 2" Ultra Low Profile Foundation, which doesn't leave space under the bed and will cost you $399-$499 (depending on the size), and the 7" Standard Foundation, which leaves around a 5" high space under the bed and cost $200 more.

Both foundations are designed according to industry standards, which means they will fit the standard sizes of the Naturepedic 2-in-1 Kids mattress as well as those of any other standardized mattress. They're made with North American wood and feature organic cotton fabrics, a solid wood frame, and closely adjacent slats for added durability and support. They're made in-house in the US and feature no chemical flame retardants.

They are easily assembled in three steps: First, lay out the wooden pieces of the foundation, with the velcro side up. Then, insert the dowel rods into the corresponding holes in the frame and secure all of the latches. And finally, simply roll out the slats along the top of the foundation, using the velcro to secure them in place.

The last 15 years of the warranty offer prorated replacement; starting at the 11th year, you will receive a repair or replacement credit equal to 60% of the original price. The credit will decrease by 4% each year for the following fourteen (14) years.

Like most mattress warranties, this one covers any defect in the mattress that is not due to your or your child's misuse or neglect. You should be aware that Naturepedic does not consider imperfections that do not prevent reasonable continued use of the mattress, such as corners that aren't perfectly shaped or symmetrical, to be defects. This is due to the fact that every Naturepedic product is constructed individually, and, as such, some degree of individualization is inherent.

Bottom Line

The Naturepedic 2-in-1 Kids Mattress is a wonderful option for any household and child, especially kids who have mastered the ability to stay dry all night. It's competitively priced, if not entirely cheap, but if you want the most natural and organic option for your child then you can't go wrong with the 2-in-1.
