Helix Kids Mattress Review
The Helix Kids is a mattress that was specifically designed to service a child between the ages of 3-12, supporting and comforting them through the formative years of their life. It has two sides to suit a child's developing body, and is fairly low cost for its high quality.
Pros and Cons
Pros
- Perfect for a developing child
- Water resistant, and so "accident" proof
- Hypoallergenic and antimicrobial
Cons
- Obsolete once the child becomes a teenager
- Shipping can be somewhat slow
Mattress Construction
The Helix Kids is a dual-sided hybrid mattress designed to carry your child through their development years. It is designed to be flipped once the child reaches the age of 8 and their body has developed enough to need different comfort and support from their bed.
Cover: A soft, hypoallergenic, and breathable Tencel fabric entirely covers both sides of the mattress, and is treated with a water-repellent finish and a hygienic microbe shield. Tencel also doesn't generate static charge, so dust and other allergens won't cling to it.
Ages 3-7 side: Consists of a layer of sturdy and dense high-grade polyurethane foam that provides good spinal support for a developing young child's growing body.
Flame-retardant layers: Both sides of this mattress, as well as the side panels, are safeguarded from flammability by layers of flame-resistant foam inserted beneath the dual top layers of the mattress and in its sides.
Coil layer: A layer consisting of hundreds of individually wrapped 5" coils with two reinforced sides that provide edge support to keep your kid safely in bed.
Ages 8-12 side: A plush and comforting gel memory foam layer. It has a medium-soft feel and great pressure relieving qualities.
Feel
As mentioned before, the two sides of the mattress have a distinct feel. The side for ages 3-7 has a medium-firm feel, while the side for ages 8-12 has a medium-soft feel. It has a medium cushioning depth and is quite bouncy, which I'm sure your child would appreciate, but not overly so as to feel like a toy, which could prove to be a problem.
Pressure Relief
This mattress is specially designed for young kids, and offers a great amount of pressure relief for their developing bodies. The only thing worth noting is that, while the Ages 8-12 side offers good pressure relief for back and side sleepers, kids who tend to sleep on their stomach may feel that it is too soft for them, and prefer to keep sleeping on the Ages 3-7 side. This is perfectly fine as long as the child is a stomach sleeper, since the other side does offer firmer support that stomach sleepers need in order to not wake up with a sore back.
Motion Isolation
The Helix Kids has quite a bit of motion transfer, mainly due to its coil layer, but that's much less of an issue for a child than it is for an adult who shares their bed with someone else. In actuality, it's not an issue at all.
Edge Support
The Kids mattress has strong edge support due to the rigid outer perimeter in the coils layer, which is specifically designed to strengthen the edge of the mattress and keep your child on it. Your child will be able to make use of the bed's entire surface area without fear of falling off.
Repositioning
Changing positions on the mattress is quite easy due to how responsive and bouncy it is. If your child tends to toss and turn, this will make it easy for them and allow them to do so without waking.
Heat Retention
The Helix Kids has a breathable cover and a support layer made of individually pocketed coils, making the mattress naturally breathable and good at dispersing and dissipating the sleeper's body heat. The breathable and water resistant cover is also great at wicking away sweat from the sleeper, which is a fantastic for helping your child stay comfortable on a hot night.
Frame & Foundation
As is stipulated in the warranty, the Helix Kids mattress is compatible with any same-sized solid platform or slatted foundation with no more than 5 inches between each slat. If you have a slatted foundation that you want to use but doesn't comply with this standard, you'll need to place a bunkie board between it and the mattress.
If you lack a suitable foundation for the mattress, you can purchase one from the Helix website for $249. It's made in the US from birch wood and upholstered with high-quality woven fabric, and can be built and dismantled in a few minutes. You can also purchase a hardwood bed frame instead of the box foundation for $499-$579 (price depends on mattress size).
Additional Details
If you purchase the Helix Kids through the official Helix website, chances are you'll be offered a $100 discount along with two free non-allergenic down alternative pillows for free with your purchase, usually via a code you enter on checkout. This is on top of the mattress already being one of the cheapest youth mattresses on the market. You can, right now, get a full Twin-sized bed, foundation, 2 pillows and a full set of sheets for around $900. This will be all your 3-year-old child needs for the next decade, so it's quite a bargain for such high quality products.
In addition to this, all Helix mattresses are made of high quality materials that are up to CertiPUR-US and OEKO-TEX standards, meaning that they are 100% certified to be free of harmful substances. This is on top of the mattress being hypoallergenic and water resistant – two things your young child will benefit greatly from.
Shipping & Delivery
Helix products are shipped for free within the contiguous US. Your new Helix Kids will arrive within two-to-four weeks following your online purchase. You'll receive a confirmation of purchase and an itemized receipt to your email after the purchase so you'll have an easy time tracking it.
All Helix products are shipped via FedEx Ground from Helix facilities across the US, and can be received without the need for signature confirmation. Each item in your order will ship separately and you will receive separate tracking numbers for each item once they are completed in production. Helix does not currently offer old mattress removal.
Once you receive your Helix Kids mattress, you'll need to unpack it, unfold it on its foundation, and let it decompress and off-gas for about 12 hours. It is recommended that you do so in a well-ventilated space to avoid lingering chemical odors.
Returns & Warranty
Helix allows you to try out their mattresses for 100 nights. If you choose to return it, you can do so after you spend at least 30 nights with it (to ensure that you've let your body get used to it) and before that time has elapsed, and you'll receive a full refund.
All Helix mattresses, such as the Helix Kids, come with a 10 year warranty. It only applies to those who reside in the US, and can only be claimed by the person who purchased the mattress. This warranty is limited, and so doesn't cover any damage done to the mattress via neglect or misuse. If you return the mattress and the warranty is accepted, you will be provided the same mattress.
Helix will not charge you for the delivery of the new mattress. You'll only be charged for the shipping and handling of the returned mattress (Helix will reimburse you for up to $100 for this shipping cost).
Bottom Line
If you're in the market for a child's bed, you'll be hard-pressed to find a better deal than the Helix Kids. It has all the qualities that a developing child needs for a healthy and comfy sleep, at a very reasonable price. The mattress may take a bit of time to arrive, and will take a couple of days to fully off-gas, but it's well worth the wait.
What kind of bed foundation should I use with my Helix Kids?
All Helix mattresses, the Helix Kids included, are designed to be used with most standard bed foundations. If you use a slated frame which has more than a 5 inch space between the slats, you'll need to use a solid barrier between the foundation and the mattress, such as a bunkie board.
How long is the Helix Kids good for?
Your mattress should last you for 10 years with proper use. Even though you can't really trust young children to be responsible, the mattress is durable enough to last, and was designed for usage by kids. You can regularly check for sagging, dents or other unforeseen modifications to keep your mattress in good health, and return it for a replacement if it's not. The Helix Kids comes with a warranty in case you encounter any issue of that nature.
Can I flip the Helix Kids to simply lengthen its lifespan?
Doing so will not do the mattress any good. The Kids mattress is designed to only be flipped to its other side once the child reaches the age of 8, and not before. It is also important to let the child sleep on the side of the mattress that's correct for their age, as different ages require different levels of comfort and support.
How can I try out a Helix mattress?
The Helix Kids comes with a trial period. Your kid will have up to a 100 nights to test out their new mattress. If you are unsatisfied you can return the mattress for a full refund. You may only opt for the refund after 30 nights of trying the mattress, so it is broken in enough to be properly appraised.
