Last updated December 12, 2024

The Helix Twilight is a fantastic low-cost mattress for stomach and back sleepers who prefer a firm, solid mattress that will fully support them without making them sink and feel like they're trapped inside a plushie. It's intended for most body types and weights, and ranks highly in terms of longevity, comfort, motion isolation and ease of repositioning.

Mattress Construction

The Helix Twilight is made in the same way all Helix mattresses are made: a cover layer, two foam layers, a coil layer, and a base layer, all constructed and hand-assembled entirely in the USA. This design ensures enough air flow for sufficient heat and moisture wicking, and has been proven to create mattresses that are comfortable, easy to ship and last for a long time.

A detailed look at the Helix Twilight's construction and layers

Cover: Helix mattresses come with the company's special Soft Touch Design cover. This cover is soft to the touch, stretchable and breathable.

Layer 1: This layer is made out of Helix's trademarked Memory Plus Foam. It has enhanced pressure relieving qualities, and provides the mattress with its firm feel.

Layer 2: The second layer of the Twilight is a transition layer mainly made to separate the first comfort layer and the coils layer. It is made out of high-grade polyfoam with a high IFD (indention force deflection) so the mattress has little give or sinkage. This layer provides the mattress with additional ergonomic support and cushioning, and is a large part of the reason why some side sleepers will feel comfortable on the mattress.

Layer 3: The third layer of the mattress is made out of hundreds of rigid individually wrapped coils. These coils help the mattress conform to your shape while limiting motion transfer, as they are separated from each other and move independently of one another. There is also a reinforced perimeter of bigger and more rigid coils that provides edge support.

Layer 4: The bottom layer of the mattress is made of Helix's trademarked DuraDense foam. This layer is especially durable and, as its name suggests, dense. This layer support the entire mattress and protects the above layer of coils from the bed's foundation, while enhancing its stability.

Feel

The Helix Twilight is a firm and supportive mattress, but its topmost memory foam layer means it’s not uncomfortably hard. It has very low cushioning depth and little to no give or sink.

While the Twilight is marketed by Helix to be a firm mattress designed for side sleepers, most strict side sleepers will find that it puts too much pressure on the joints, and should opt for the softer Helix Midnight. If you're one of those rare strict side sleepers that prefers a firm mattress (possibly because you're light) and still want to try this mattress out, then more power to you, but I'd consider Helix's softer mattresses a better fit more most.

Pressure Relief

The Twilight's pressure relief qualities are good, but nothing to write home about. The mattress is very supportive, even for heavyweight people, but those who suffer from joint pains, especially due to sleeping on a hard mattress on their side, may want to try out a softer mattress, such as the Helix Sunset.

Motion Isolation

The Helix Twilight does a great job of limiting motion transfer. Its special Helix blend memory foams, together with its individual coils, make for a mattress that easily sections areas for every individual on it to use without disturbance. This is great for anyone who tosses and turns at night, or sleeps (or attempts to) next to someone who does.

Edge Support

The Helix Twilight has a reinforced perimeter of individual coils in its third layer, which makes you feel supported no matter where you sleep on the mattress, and makes the mattress feel larger than it is due to the extra space you gain on it.

Repositioning

The Twilight is quite responsive, though not very bouncy. Still, if you find yourself repositioning a lot throughout the night, this mattress will make that easy. It's also very good for intimacy, as it's firm enough for you and your partner to keep balance on without any issue, while being easy enough to reposition on for you to effortlessly switch positions without straining or tiring.

Heat Retention

As mentioned above, Helix mattresses are all designed to have good airflow for heat and moisture wicking, and the materials that make them do a lot to help in this regard. The firmness of the Twilight mattress enhances this quality even further by minimizing the amount of your surface area that touches the mattress, letting more of your skin breath. The LUXE has more heat and moisture wicking qualities, so you should consider the upgrade if you tend to sleep hot.

Frame & Foundation

You should always put your mattress on a foundation, and Helix mattresses are no different. It improves airflow and increases the longevity of the mattress considerably. Since Helix mattresses follow industry standards in terms of size and weight, you can pretty much use any standard foundation with it.

If for whatever reason you do not own a proper foundation for your Helix Twilight, you can purchase one from the official Helix website (you can find a link to it at the bottom of this review). The Helix foundation is made of birch wood upholstered with woven fabric, can be assembled and disassembled in mere minutes, and costs $249. You can also get an adjustable base, which features built-in massage technology, for $750-$850 (price depends on the size of your Helix mattress).

If you want to also purchase a frame for your mattress, the official Helix website offers this as well. It is made of hardened steel with fiberglass-infused resins, takes about the same amount of time to assemble and disassemble as the foundation, and costs $150.

The foundation and frame aren't always available for all mattress sizes. They, like Helix mattresses, are made in the USA.

Helix LUXE Upgrade

The LUXE upgrade is intended to add heat wicking and plush to your mattress, turning it into a hotel-quality luxurious bed for $400-$900 (price of the upgrade depends on the size of the mattress). It adds a zoned lumbar support, additional comfort layers for added cushioning and a plush feel (which is perfect for side sleepers), and an extra soft mattress cover with better heat and moisture wicking.

The Helix Twilight LUXE mattress

The LUXE's zoned support is added by introducing softer coils underneath the shoulder area for more sink, and firmer coils under the hip area. This helps the mattress better cradle your body and aligns your spine, especially when you're laying on your side.

Additional Details

If you purchase the Helix Twilight through the official Helix website, chances are you'll be offered a $100-$200 discount along with two free non-allergenic down alternative pillows for free with a purchase of a mattress. This is on top of the mattress already being one of the cheapest options on the market.

That is not to say that it is low quality, though. All Helix mattresses are made of high quality materials that are up to CertiPUR-US and OEKO-TEX standards, meaning that they are 100% certified to be free of harmful substances.

Shipping & Delivery

Helix products are shipped for free within the contiguous US. The shipments arrive within less than two weeks after your online purchase. You'll receive a confirmation of purchase and an itemized receipt to your email after the purchase so you'll have an easy time tracking it.

Returns & Warranty

Helix allows you to try out their mattresses for 100 nights. If you choose to return it, you can do so after you spend at least 30 nights with it (to ensure that you've let your body get used to it) and before that time has elapsed, and you'll receive a full refund.

All standard Helix mattresses, such as the Helix Twilight, come with a 10 year warranty, while LUXE mattress come with a 15 year warranty. It only applies to those who reside in the US, and can only be claimed by the person who purchased the mattress. This warranty is limited, and so doesn't cover any damage done to the mattress via neglect or misuse. If you return the mattress and the warranty is accepted, you will be provided the same mattress. If it's not in stock, you'll be provided with a similar, yet more expensive mattress, such as the Twilight LUXE if you purchased the standard Twilight mattress, or the Helix Dawn, which is another firm hybrid mattress.

Helix will not charge you for the delivery of the new mattress. You'll only be charged for the shipping and handling of the returned mattress (Helix will reimburse you for up to $100 for this shipping cost).

An Up-Close Look at The Helix Twilight

Bottom Line

If you tend to sleep on your back and stomach and are in need of a proper supportive mattress that is firm and easy to move around on, then this is it. You won't need to spend an arm and a leg on this one, and the warranty and trial period ensure that you'll get your money's worth. It may not be fully suited for strict side sleepers, but if you don't spend your whole sleep on your side, this mattress will suit you right.

FAQ

What kind of bed frame should I use with my Helix Twilight?
