Mattress Construction

The hybrid Midnight mattress has a lot going for it, which is why it caters to a very wide demographic. Its construction and materials make it firm enough for people who need it to feel supported, yet soft enough for those who prefer to be cradled by their mattress.

Cover: Each Helix mattress comes with the company's special Soft Touch Design cover, which is stretchable and breathable. It is optimized for airflow and is very pleasant to the touch.

Layer 1: This the comfort layer of the Midnight, and is made out of Helix's trademarked Memory Plus Foam, which is uniquely pressure relieving, and provides the mattress with its medium feel.

Layer 2: The second layer of the Midnight is a transition layer made out of high-grade polyfoam. It provides the mattress with additional ergonomic support and cushioning, and has a medium IFD (indention force deflection) so the mattress has a bit of give and sinkage, but not too much.

Layer 3: The base layer of the mattress is made out of hundreds of medium-strength individually wrapped coils. These coils help to cradle your body while also limiting motion transfer. There is also a reinforced perimeter of bigger and more rigid coils that provides edge support.

Layer 4: Underneath the layer of coils, there's a layer of Helix's trademarked DuraDense foam. As its name suggests, this foam is especially durable and dense, which helps provide base support to the entire mattress and protects the above layer of coils from the bed's foundation.

Feel

In terms of firmness, the Helix Midnight has a distinctly medium feel. The top of the mattress has a fair bit of sink and give and the mattress itself feels very hugging, yet solid under your body. While the mattress conforms to your shape, it doesn't fully do so, leaving you feeling more like you're sleeping on top of it rather than in it.

Pressure Relief

The Midnight's pressure relief qualities are great, mainly thanks to its make and materials. This quality is further elevated with the LUXE version of the mattress. While it's not the very best in this regard, the Helix Midnight is nevertheless a solid choice for those who suffer from hip or shoulder pain. That is, as long as they don't weight above 200 lb., as this mattress isn't very supportive at those weights.

Motion Isolation

Motion transfer on the Helix Midnight is extremely limited. In fact, your partner could bounce on the other side of the bed without disturbing you much. Thanks to the soft and pliable materials of the mattress, it's responsive yet not very bouncy, and the layer of coils bolster its motion isolation even further. This mattress is very suited for those who sleep next to a restless partner, and those who wake easily from motion.

Edge Support

The Helix Midnight's reinforced perimeter of individual coils offers the mattress a good edge support. You can sleep anywhere you want on top of it without feeling like you're about to fall off, which makes the mattress feel much larger than it is. While the edge support of the Midnight isn't as great as what you'll find on an innerspring mattress, it'll be more than acceptable for anyone who's not heavyset.

Repositioning

While the Midnight isn't very bouncy, it is quite responsive, so moving on top of it isn't too much of a hassle. The LUXE has more heat and moisture wicking qualities, so consider it if you tend to sleep hot. Though, if it's not a main concern of yours, then even the standard Helix Midnight mattress will easily keep you comfortable and cool throughout the night.

Frame & Foundation

Helix advises its clients to place their mattresses on a foundation to increases its lifespan, improve airflow, and creates the optimal height for your bed, and you should definitely heed this advice. While your Helix can sit directly on the floor, that can lead to mold on the bottom of your mattress, and trying to avoid this scenario will require you to prop the mattress up regularly for airflow. As a side note,if you’re hoping to use your current foundation, but it has slats that are more than 5 inches apart, it’s important to use a bunkie board or piece of plywood to provide the proper support to your mattress. Otherwise, the bottom layer may be damage over time, causing the mattress to sag.

If you do not own a proper foundation for your Helix Midnight, you can purchase one from the official Helix website. The official Helix foundation is made of birch wood upholstered with woven fabric, and is perfectly suited for your Helix mattress. It can be both assembled and disassembled in less than 5 minutes, and is completely made in the USA. The Helix foundation costs $249. You can also get an adjustable base, which features built-in massage technology, for $750-$850 (price depends on the size of your Helix mattress).

You can also purchase a frame for you mattress from the official Helix website. This frame features hardened steel with fiberglass-infused resins, so it can last a lifetime and isn't damaged easily. It takes about the same amount of time to assemble and disassemble as the foundation. The frame fits most bolt-on headboards, and costs $150.

The foundation and frame aren't always available for all mattress sizes, so make sure they are in stock before purchasing the mattress if purchasing them alongside it is important to you.

Helix LUXE Upgrade

The LUXE upgrade turns this low-cost, high-quality mattress into a luxury hotel mattress for $400-$900 (price of upgrade depends on the size of the mattress). This upgrade adds a zoned lumbar support, additional comfort layers for added cushioning and a plush feel, and an extra soft mattress cover with better heat and moisture wicking. This upgrade is highly recommended to anyone who has the funds for it and already decided to purchase the Helix Midnight.

The LUXE upgrade increases the height of the mattress by 2". It introduces softer coils underneath the shoulder area for more sink, and firmer coils under the hip area so the mattress better cradles your body and aligns your spine. It also features more coils in general, which improves the Midnight's ability to conform to your shape and position.
