Mattress Construction
The Brooklyn Sedona is composed of different types of foam providing comfort and cushioning side by side with support, while a layer of 8'' coils gives the mattress extra support and adds bounciness for better mobility.
Cover: The mattress' cover consists of a woven phase-change material padded with foam to curb the build up of heat and give sleepers a soft feel.
Layer 1: 1'' of spongy foam specially designed by Brooklyn Bedding for increased body-contouring and maximum comfort.
Layer 2: 2'' of gel memory foam slowly reacting to pressure pleasantly swaddling sleepers' body and increasing the melting-into-the-bed effect created by the 1st layer. This foam is characterized by low thermal conductivity, which reduces heat retention.
Layer 3: 1" inch of hyper-dense memory foam which also adapts slowly to body pressure adding more contouring to the mattress.
Layer 4: 1'' of much harder and more concentrated polyurethane foam countering the softness of the memory foam layers above preventing them from sinking excessively and separating them from the coils below.
Later 5: 8'' of up to 1,032 individually encased coils which function as the mattress' support layer. The coils give pressure point relief, increase bounciness and enable ease of movement.
Layer 6: 1'' of firm poly foam giving the mattress a solid and stable base.
Feel
The Brooklyn Sedona offers the classic delicate balance of softness and firmness found in high-quality hybrid mattresses. The slow responsive memory foam which makes up the top 3 layers cozily envelop the sleeper's body, while the hardened polyurethane foam and the 1,000+ coils provide them with solid support and bounciness. In other words, most sleepers will experience a very comfortable sinking sensation without losing stability.
Pressure Relief
By and large, the Sedona Hybrid has good capacity for pressure relief. The memory foam in its 3 upper layers provide ample contouring. This foam makes body weight distribute evenly across the mattress.
Specifically speaking, lightweight sleepers will have no pressure problems regardless of their sleeping position. They'll highly appreciate the softness of the mattress first and second layer.
Average weight sleepers who sleep on their back and side will get sufficient support from the coils while the mattress' memory foam will alleviate pressure which might accumulate in certain points, especially in the hips and shoulders for side sleepers.
In contrast, stomach sleepers who weigh 150 lbs. - 250 lbs. may find the Sedona to be insufficiently firm and, therefore, not supporting enough. There is a high probability that they'll suffer from lower back pain as a result of the mattress' incapacity to keep their spine in proper alignment.
Sleepers whose weight exceeds 250 lbs. may sink too much in all sleeping positions. They're recommended opting for a firmer mattress like the Brooklyn Titan or even the firmer version of the Brooklyn Custom.
Motion Isolation
The Sedona isolates motion very well. Three layers of slow responding and memory foam absorb a substantial portion of the kinetic energy created by sleepers' movements.
It's true that the coils may increase motion transfer and make some noise as the mattress gets older. However, because they're separately encased, the quantity of motion they spread is relatively low.
Repositioning
The large amount of soft foam the Sedona contains may hamper movement especially for heavyweight sleepers. The hardened polyurethane foam in the 4th layer and the 8'' coils under it will provide some balance by preventing over-sinking. Yet, if your body weight exceeds 300 lbs. and you're a restless sleeper, you'll move more easily on a firmer mattress.
Edge Support
Although the Sedona's set of coils provide good support, the perimeter is weaker due to the upper foam layers. It doesn't mean that you'll slide out of bed if you sleep on the edge, but you'll sink more especially if you're a heavy sleeper. That will make you move towards the center shrinking your sleep area.
Heat Retention
The Sedona is a wise choice for hot sleepers. The phase-change material the mattress' cover is made of releases heat and reduces temperature at the point where the body meets the mattress. The Gel memory foam in the second layer also dissipates heat. Finally, the coils allow free flow of air enabling effective moisture wicking.
Frame and Foundation
Much like other Brooklyn Bedding's mattresses, the Sedona can be placed on any foundation which is firm enough including slats, box spring and even an adjustable base. If you decide to use a slat foundation, the slats should be no more than 3''-4'' apart.
Brooklyn bedding puts at your disposal three foundation which will be compatible with your new Sedona. The Super Duty High Rise Platform gives strong center support. Its prices range from $129 to $219 depending on your mattress size.
The Ascension Bi-Fold box is a heavy-duty tubular steel construction that's shaped like a spring box. Prices start at $229 for a twin size mattress. The largest CA King size costs $329.
Finally, the Ready-to-Assemble Box is based on slats, and it's the most expensive foundation. For a Twin size, you'll need to pay $249, while for a California King size you'll need to pay $369.
You can also, of course, purchase an adjustable base from the Brooklyn Bedding website for $499-$1,099, depending on how luxurious you want it to be.
Additional Details
Brooklyn Bedding's main offices are located in Phoenix Arizona, USA, which is also where all its mattresses are manufactured. The company has been operating on the market since 1995. It sells its products online since 2010. There are showrooms in different places in the US where you can physically test the mattress you wish to buy. A location finder on the company's website will help you trace these rooms.
One of the pluses of buying a Brooklyn Bedding's mattress is the year-round discounts of 20-25 percent the company offers on its mattresses and related products.
All the company's mattresses are CertiPUR-US Certified. Accordingly, they don't contain toxic ingredients and they meet strict health standards related to the materials they're made of, emissions and durability.
Important note: The Split California King Sedona offered on the Brooklyn Bedding website is actually only half of the mattress, and needs to be basically purchased twice for you to get a Split California King-sized Sedona mattress. Also, the divide between them will be felt as a firmer section where the two mattresses meet in the middle, so it will almost definitely be an issue for you if you tend to snuggle with the person you share the mattress with.
