Brooklyn Bedding Custom Mattress Review

Last updated December 06, 2024

The Brooklyn Bedding Custom, as its name suggests, enables you to construct a customized mattress that fits your specific needs. You simply choose your desired firmness level, the type of comfort layer (which will affect the feel of the bed) and the top fabric (which is the point where your body meets the mattress). On top of that, you can split your choices and customize two sides of the mattress for you and for your sleep partner.

Mattress Construction

The Brooklyn Bedding Custom is built from five layers which combine body-contouring foam and coils for firm support. When you buy the mattress, you can select your desired firmness level — soft, medium or firm. You also have three options from which you can choose the mattress cover and its comfort layer. Each choice has its own pluses and it may fit different types of sleepers. The price of the mattress can increase by $100 depending on your chosen cover. On top of that, you can split your choices, literally speaking, and get two different types of mattresses conjoined into a single unit.

Cover: The three options for the mattress' top fabric consist of the following:

  • Organic cotton infused with hypoallergenic qualities and characterized by softness and breathability maximizing comfort and minimizing heat retention.
  • A uniquely woven top knit cooling panel for effective heat dissipation — costs an extra $100.
  • A recovery fabric which converts heat into energy expediting body recovery making it ideal for athletes and sleepers who suffer from back problems — costs an extra $100.

Comfort layer: A 2" layer made of of three different materials you can choose from:

  • TitanFlex foam for increased responsiveness and body-contouring. This soft foam is for sleepers who like to experience a pleasant melting-into-the-bed sensation.
  • Luxe memory foam characterized by hyper density, which makes it ideal for sleepers who suffer from hips or back pain and, therefore, require deep compression support.
  • Latex, which is highly responsive to body movements due to hyper elasticity and buoyancy. It provides excellent pressure point relief and a cool sleeping environment thanks to its breathability.

Transitional layer: 2'' of hardened foam which functions as a buffer separating the softer upper layers from the firmer coils below.

Support Layer: 8'' of up to 1,024 individually encased coils, which support the entire mattress and gives its durability. The coils are designed for zoned support. In other words, they make the mattress firmer at the center and softer in its lower and upper parts. This architecture helps you maintain proper spinal alignment.

Base Layer: 1'' of highly dense foam which supports the coils above it and functions as a foundation for the entire mattress.

Feel

As mentioned above, the Brooklyn Bedding Custom comes in three levels of firmness — soft, medium and firm. The firmness you'll choose will affect the way you'll experience the mattress. Generally speaking, the foam in the upper layer gives sleepers a plush sinking feel countered by the firmer coils. These two contrasting qualities ensure proper balance between bounciness and body-contouring most sleepers will find to be highly comfortable.

Pressure Relief

Pressure relief is a function of sleepers' body weight and their choice of a soft, medium or firm mattress.

Lightweight sleepers under 150 lbs. will especially enjoy the push feeling of the softer version of the Brooklyn Custom. The medium version should also be fine for them, but if they choose it, they'd better opt for the softer TitanFlex foam as a comfort layer to prevent to accumulation of pressure especially in the shoulders and hips.

Average weight sleepers who weigh 150-250 lbs. should take the medium mattress which combines comfort with sound support. Stomach sleepers will feel more stable with a comfort layer made of Latex foam. It'll prevent the mattress from being too soft and their hips from sinking out of alignment.

Heavyweight sleepers weighing more than 250 lbs. should naturally go for the firm mattress as it will provide them with the support they need in the lumbar area. Side sleepers are recommended selecting Luxe Memory Foam as their comfort layer. Its density will reduce pressure in the joints. Stomach sleepers should choose a latex foam comfort layer due to its elasticity, which will prevent too much sinking. Its breathability facilitates heat and moisture wicking.

Motion Isolation

Despite its 8'' coils, the Custom isolates sleepers' movements quite well. Its upper foam layers trap most of the kinetic energy generated by these movements. Put differently, if your partner doesn't moves too forcibly and unless you're an exceptionally light sleeper, the chances that he/she will disturb your sleep are small.

Furthermore, although the springs may become noisy as the mattress ages, the Brooklyn Custom's coils are individually-encased, which makes them quieter.

Repositioning

The coils in the Brooklyn Bedding Custom provide ample bounciness to allow easy movement. If you choose as your comfort layer the more elastic latex, you'll enjoy even greater ease of movement, but it comes at the expense of softness and body-contouring.

Edge Support

The encased coils give the mattress strong support at the center and around the perimeter. Sleepers whose weight doesn't exceed 250 lbs. won't have a sinking problem even if they sleep close to the edge. Having said that, selecting the slow moving Luxe foam as a comfort layer may increase sinkage on the perimeter, though not to the extent of falling off the bed.

Heavier sleepers who weigh close to and more than 300 lbs. might feel unstable on the edge of the Custom, especially if they sleep on their side. They'll need a firmer mattress with stronger perimeter support, such as the Brooklyn Titan.

Heat Retention

The coils support layer enables free flow of air and so reduces heat retention. If you're a hot sleeper, it's highly advisable to opt for latex as your comfort layer and cotton as cover due to the breathability of both materials.

Frame & Foundation

Any type of foundation that is firm enough will work well with the Brooklyn Bedding Custom. It's possible to put the mattress on a slat bed foundation or on a box spring. If the foundation includes slats, they shouldn't be more than 3''-4'' apart.

Brooklyn offers its Super Duty High Rise Platform which provides strong center support for all mattresses. Prices are $179 for Queen size, and $219 for King and Cal King sizes. There is also the more expensive Ascension Bi-Fold Foundation at a price of $299 for a Queen size mattress and $329 for King and Cal King sizes. Lastly, you can purchase an adjustable base for $499-$1,099, depending on the model.

You can trace these rooms by referring to a location finder on the company's website.

Shipping & Delivery

The Brooklyn Custom is shipped for free within the continental United States and it'll take a couple of days to arrive at your doorstep.

Customers in Hawaii and Alaska have to pay $125. Shipping to Canada comes with an additional cost of $250. These shipping charges are non-refundable. Delivery time to destinations outside the contiguous US is 12-20 business days.

Brooklyn Bedding doesn't offer white glove delivery, but you can opt for third-party services for which you'll be charged $80-$120. For the money you pay, the delivery men will put your new mattress anywhere you want inside your house and will remove the old one.

Returns and Warranty

Brooklyn Bedding gives its customers a 120-night sleep trial, which includes a break-in period of 30 nights. In case you decide to return the mattress after 30 days (and no later than 120 days), you'll have to donate it to local charity and send the company the donation slip in order to get a full refund. In the unlikely event that you'll find no one who will be willing to accept your mattress, the company will set up a free disposal service for you.

The Brooklyn Custom is backed by a 10-year warranty which covers premature erosion of its materials and defects. Defects are defined by the company as body impressions deeper than 1''. The warranty is void if the mattress is unpacked or if it's placed on an improper foundation.

The Bottom Line

Upon buying the Brooklyn Bedding Custom, you have the privilege of choosing a mattress that matches not only your preferences, but also your partner's preferences. Your choices will determine whether your mattress will be softer, firmer or more elastic. Whatever you choose, you'll still enjoy a strong support provided by an 8'' layer of coils which will make you feel stable in your bed and help you keep your back properly aligned.
