Amerisleep AS3 Mattress Review

The Amerisleep AS3 is an all-foam mattress which provides an upgraded sleep experience by combining deep pressure relieving contouring with enhanced support. The mattress is also characterized by excellent motion isolation and efficient temperature regulation enabling sleepers to enjoy a cool sleep environment.

The AS3 is a part of a series of AS mattress models starting with the AS1 and culminating with the AS5. The higher the number, the thicker and firmer the mattress is. Accordingly, the AS3 has a medium firmness level.

In addition, unlike most other AS models, the AS3 has an additional foam and coils hybrid version meant for sleepers seeking a more bouncy mattress. This review focuses on the all-foam version.

Mattress Construction

The AS3 is 12'' thick. It's built from 3 layers of foam of different firmness levels and density. The foam in these layers provides deep contouring side by side with strong support and durability.

Cover: Plush fabric made of a blend of cotton and polyester. The fabric is highly breathable and, so, assists in moisture wicking.

Comfort Layer: 3" of cushy 10 ILD Bio-Pur memory foam, which molds to the body mitigating pressure points. The foam is manufactured with the use of open-cell technology meant to reduce heat retention.

Transition Layer: 2" of dense 30 ILD poly foam curbing the sinking generated by the comfort later. This foam uses Surface Modification Technology (SMT) which delivers 5 zoned support targeting individual areas in the body. The poly foam is characterized by a convoluted structure enabling free circulation of air.

Support Layer: 7'' of highly dense 35 ILD Bio-Core poly foam supporting sleepers, generating lift and adding durability to the mattress.

Feel

The soft and breathable cover fabric of the AS3 gives a gentle feel and keeps the surface of the mattress cool and dry even after long hours of lying on the bed.

The Bio-Pur memory foam perfectly conforms to the body. Moreover, it takes a while to snap back into place once compressed giving a soft cradling sensation and maximizing comfort. At the same time, the hardened poly foam in the transition and support layers prevents excessive sinking making sleepers feel they are on the mattress instead of being stuck in it.

Pressure Relief

The medium firmness level of the AS3 makes it ideal for side sleepers of all weights. The contouring Bio-Pur memory foam will wrap their body mitigating pressure in sensitive areas, the hips and shoulders in particular. The 5 zoned support given by the poly foam in the transition layer will lift these sensitive areas helping sleepers maintain a healthy sleeping position. Finally, the hardened Bio-Core foam in the support layer will keep XL sleepers stable on the mattress by reducing sinking.

Back sleepers who weigh up to 250 pounds will also feel highly comfortable lying on the AS3. The cushy Bio-Pur memory foam will prevent the accumulation of pressure in their lumbar and thoracic spine. The SMT support delivered by the foam in the transition layer will make sure these areas in their back remain properly aligned.

Back sleepers whose weight exceeds 250 pounds will have to deal with over-sinking, which may result in discomfort and pain. They should opt for the firmer and more supportive AS2 mattress. 

Stomach sleepers weighing less than 150 pounds will get along well with the AS3. They'll benefit from a sound balance of contouring and support.

In contrast, their heavier counterparts will find the mattress too soft. Excessive sinking in their abdomen area will exert pressure on their lumbar back and may lead to pain and even curvature disorders in the long run. Medium and heavyweight stomach sleepers should check out the AS2 and even the firmest AS1 model.

Motion Isolation

The AS3 does a wonderful job isolating motion. The thick soft memory foam in its comfort layer can easily absorb most of the energy generated by sleepers' movements making sure it stays in their side of their bed and not disturb their partners. Put otherwise, sleeping on the AS3, you can expect quiet and peaceful nights even if the one lying next to you tends to move a lot.

Repositioning

Changing sleep positions on the AS3 doesn't require much effort when it comes to sleepers who weigh up to 250 pounds. The sinking generated by the comfort layer is well countered by the hardened foam in the two layers below making it quite easy to maneuver on the surface of the mattress.

Even if we take into account the partially enhanced support given by transition layer plus the support of the denser Bio-Core foam below, it'll still not be enough to provide stable edges especially in case of heavier sleepers.These sleepers will need to move towards the center of the mattress, where they'll feel more secure. By doing so, they'll reduce their potential sleeping space.

Heat Retention

The AS3 is designed to reduce heat retention. Its breathable cover wicks away moisture from the surface of the mattress. The open-cell technology used in the manufacturing of the Bio-Pur memory foam prevents the accumulation of hot spots. Moreover, the convoluted structure of the foam in the transition layer enables air to flow freely in and out of the mattress aiding in the cooling process.

Frame & Foundation

The AS3 works well with almost all the frames, foundations and adjustable bases you'll find on the market provided that they're solid enough to support its weight. If you're going to use a slat bed, you'll have to make sure the slats are no more than 2.75'' apart. Amerisleep sells its own sleep platforms.

The Platform Bed Frame is marked by a modern design style. It's highly supportive on account of its thick hardwood slats. The frame can be assembled easily and quickly. The Amerisleep Adjustable Bed+ has multiple features meant to enhance your sleep experience. They comprise head and foot articulation (60 degrees max head tilt and 35 degrees max foot tilt), wireless remote, Alexa, Google Home and mobile app controls, three preset setting and under-bed Led lighting. The bed can be fitted with 6'', 9'' or 12'' legs. Starting price is $1,260 for a Twin XL mattress. Maximum price stands at $3,000 for a California King and Split King mattresses. These prices include free white glove delivery and a 10-year limited warranty.

Amerisleep was founded in 2010. The AS3 as well as all of its other mattresses are manufactured in Rancho Cucamonga, California.

These mattresses are CertiPUR-US certified indicating their foam doesn't contain any materials which may pose risk to human health or harm the environment, for example, ozone depleters, PBDEs, TDCPP or TCEP (“Tris”) flame retardants, formaldehyde, phthalates and heavy metals.

Equally important, to decrease carbon footprint, Amerisleep uses plant-based oils instead of petrochemicals for manufacturing, processing and assembling the Bio-Pur memory foam and the Bio-Core foam in the AS3's comfort and support layers. Lastly, the company adopts all the necessary procedures and follow strict guidelines meant cut back on the emissions of volatile organic compounds.

Shipping & Delivery

The AS3 will be delivered to your ground-level door wrapped in plastic, rolled and compressed in a box in up to 7 days from the moment you issued your order. You'll be required to carry the box to your chosen room (you should be assisted by another person as the box containing the mattress can be quite heavy), unpack the mattress and set it up. At present, Amersleep doesn't offer white glove delivery.

The mattress is shipped for free but only to destinations within the conterminous United States. If you want it to be shipped to Alaska, Hawaii or Canada, you'll need to hire a third company to do the shipping for you and pay for its services.

Trial & Warranty

The AS3 is sold with a 100-night trial and a break in period of 30 day. That is, you'll be able you to return the mattress and be fully refunded 30 nights from the moment it reached your doorstep and no later than 100 nights.

The mattress is backed by a 20-year warranty. During the first 10 years, Amerisleep will repair or replace the mattress free of charge. In the second 10 years, the warranty becomes prorated. In other words, you'll be charged 50% of the mattress' original price. You'll also have to pay for shipping and labor costs.

The warranty applies only to the first purchaser of the mattress and it covers manufacturing defects, among which are premature erosion of the foam including cracks and impressions on the surface of the mattress greater than 1'' as long as they don't appear on the perimeter and in the corners.

The warranty doesn't cover natural wear-and-tear and damage caused by stains, spills, tears and burning marks. It becomes annulled in case the law tag is removed or the mattress is placed on a foundation which is improper or not supportive enough.

The Bottom Line

The AS3 is a good fit for most types of sleepers who weigh up to 250 pounds and for heavier side sleepers who weigh more than 250 pounds. The mattress is perfectly capable of supporting their weight while providing enhanced pressure relieving contouring and comfort. No less important is its high capacity for motion isolation and temperature regulation, which makes it ideal for people whose partner is a restless sleeper and for people who tend to sleep hot.
