Amerisleep AS3 Hybrid Mattress Review

The Amerisleep AS3 Hybrid combines the deep contouring of memory foam with the bounce and support of a coil system for the purpose of providing you with maximum comfort while maintaining a healthy sleep position.

The mattress has a parallel all-foam version and is a part of a series of models starting with the AS1 and ending with the AS5. The higher the number, the thicker and softer the mattress is. Appearing in the middle, the AS3 Hybrid is characterized by a medium feel.

Mattress Construction

The AS3 Hybrid is 12'' thick. It has a simple but highly effective design comprised of two layers of foam and a layer of pocketed steel coils, which, combined together, deliver deep contouring side by side with bounce and orthopedic support.

Cover: Soft fabric made of a blend of cotton and polyester. The cotton is highly breathable facilitating moisture wicking. The cover can be zipped off for cleaning and washing.

Comfort Layer: 3'' of malleable 10 ILD Bio-Pur memory foam conforming to the shape of the body alleviating pressure. The manufacturing process of the foam applies open-cell technology, which significantly improves its capacity to regulate temperature.

Support Layer: 8'' medium-firm 16 gauge individually wrapped coils generating lift and bounce and reducing sinking. The coils are reinforced in the center and are encased in a thin layer of poly foam in the perimeter providing enhanced spinal support and making the edges more stable.

Base Layer: 1'' of hardened poly foam supporting the coils as they compress and increasing the mattress' structural integrity.

Feel

The breathable cotton and polyester cover keeps the surface of the mattress cool and dry even after long hours of sleep.

The combination of a thick layer of cushy memory foam and 8'' coils gives the mattress a medium firmness feel. The memory foam enables a deep melting-into-the-bed sensation, which cuddles the body and increases comfort. At the same time, the coils generate bounce lifting the body and preventing a quicksand effect. This makes sleepers feel they're 'on' the mattress instead on 'in' it.

Pressure Relief

The AS3 Hybrid is a great fit for side sleepers of all weights as it provides a sound balance of comfort and support. The thick memory foam in the comfort layer will contour their hips and shoulders alleviating pressure. The coils below will provide enough bounce to elevate these areas enabling these sleepers, even the heavier ones, to maintain a healthy position.

Back sleepers who weigh up to 250 pounds will get along fine with AS3 Hybrid. The contouring memory foam will wrap their body soothing their spinal muscles mitigating everyday aches and pains. The central zoned support delivered by the coil system will target the lower and middle areas of their back keeping their spine properly aligned.

Back sleepers whose weight exceeds 250 pounds won't feel as comfortable as their less heavy counterparts lying on the mattress as it won't be able to give them the support they need. Consequently, they may suffer from over-sinking, discomfort and pain.

The AS3 will appeal to lightweight stomach sleepers. The 3'' soft memory foam in the comfort layer will cushion their abdomen area reducing pressure in their lumber back. The coils with their strong zoned center support will generate the necessary lift to prevent their abdomen from sinking and throwing their spine out of its natural alignment

The closer stomach sleepers get to 200 pounds and beyond, the less effectively the mattress will be able to support their body. Excess sinking in their abdomen and pelvis may result in pain and even curvature disorders in the long run. These sleepers should opt for the firmer AS2 mattress.

Motion Isolation

The memory foam in the AS3 Hybrid's comfort layer has a relatively slow response time. In other words, it'll take it a while to resume its former state once compressed.This slow response time enables the foam to absorb most of the kinetic energy generated by sleepers' movement and minimize its transfer across the mattress.

The coils below the memory foam are individually wrapped, which also limits their capacity to transfer motion. All in all, the AS3 Hybrid scores well above the average in its ability to isolate motion and is, thus, a good choice for sleeper whose partner tends to move a lot at night.

Repositioning

The AS3 Hybrid performs mediocrely when it comes to ease of movement. It does better than the parallel AS3 all-foam model thanks to the bounce generated by its coils. Yet it's not enough to counter the soft and sinkable memory foam-based comfort layer above, which makes it harder for heavier sleepers to maneuver on its surface. These sleepers won't 'drown' in the mattress. However, they'll have to exert more effort changing positions, and this can be quite tiring especially it they tend to sleep restlessly.

The AS3 Hybrid's edges are highly stable, much more than you'd expect from a mattress of a medium firmness level. The AS3 Hybrid, much like the other Amerisleep's AS models, is designed to minimize heat retention. Its breathable fabric cover effectively wicks moisture away. Additional Details

Amerisleep started operating in the American market in 2010. All its mattresses, the AS3 Hybrid is included, are 100% American-made. They're manufactured in Rancho Cucamonga, California.

The foam in these mattresses is CertiPUR-US certified, which guarantees it doesn't contain substances which may endanger human health or threaten the environment, for instance, ozone depleters, PBDEs, TDCPP or TCEP (“Tris”) flame retardants, formaldehyde, phthalates and heavy metals.

In addition, in order to minimize carbon footprint, the Bio-Pur memory foam in the comfort layer is manufactured with the use of plant-based oils instead of petrochemicals common in the mattress industry. Lastly, Amerisleep applies strict procedures aimed at reducing emissions of volatile organic compounds.

Shipping & Delivery

The AS3 Hybrid will arrive at your doorstep wrapped in plastic, rolled and compressed in a box in up to 7 days. The box is quite heavy (especially if you've ordered one of the larger mattress sizes), so you'll need the help of another person to carry it to your chosen room and set up the mattress. Amerisleep doesn't offer white glove delivery.

Amerisleep will ship the mattress to destinations within the lower 48 U.S. states only and with no additional cost. Shipping to Alaska, Hawaii or Canada requires the paid services of a third delivery company.

Trial & Warranty

The AS3 Hybrid comes with a 100-night trial and a break in period of 30 day, which means you can return it and get a full refund 30 nights from the moment it was delivered to you and no later than 100 nights.

The mattress is backed by a 20-year warranty. In the course of the first 10 years, it'll be repaired or replaced at no additional cost. From the 10^th year onwards, the warranty becomes prorated. That is to say, you'll have to pay 50% of the mattress price when you bought it as well as for shipping and labor.

The warranty extends only to the original purchaser of the mattress. It covers manufacturing defects including premature deterioration of the foam resulting in cracks and indentations on the surface of the mattress deeper than 1'' provided that they haven't occurred on the perimeter and in the corners.

The warranty doesn't cover natural wear-and-tear and accidental damage, such as stains, spills, tears and burning marks. It becomes void if the law tag is removed or if the mattress is put on an improper or inadequately supportive foundation.
