Mattress Construction

The EcoCloud is especially designed for comfort and support. 12.5'' tall, the mattress consists of a cover layer on top of two layers of latex and steel coils.

The Layers of the EcoCloud Hybrid

Cover: 0.5'' of organic cotton and sustainable New Zealand wool. These are highly breathable materials which facilitate moisture wicking.

Comfort Layer: 4'' of Talalay latex. This buoyant latex is highly responsive to sleepers weight distributing it across the mattress and preventing the accumulation of pressure points in the body.

Support layer: 8'' pocketed coils divided into 5 zones providing the mattress with area support vital for keeping sleepers' spine properly aligned and mitigating back pain.

The mattress' main coil system is supplemented by an additional double layer of 16 gauge coils around the mattress' perimeter to reinforce the edges and prevent sagging.

Feel

The soft organic cotton and the New Zealand wool in the EcoClud Hybrid's cover give a smooth plush feel and contour the body. Their breathability keeps the surface of the mattress cool to the touch.

If you're looking for the warm hug sensation of melting-into-the-bed typical of memory foam mattresses, the EcoCloud isn't going to give you that. The hyper-elastic Talalay latex make it responsive and bouncy. Instead of sinking, your body will be lifted and you'll feel that you're floating on the mattress. The zone support provided by the coils will target different areas in your body making you feel highly stable.

Pressure Relief

The EcoCloud Hybrid fits side sleepers of all weights. The plush surface of the mattress and the elasticity of the Talalay latex effectively responds to body weight mitigating pressure.

The coils help sleepers maintain good posture by providing zone support, which targets specific body areas prone to suffer from pressure — the hips and shoulders in particular.

The EcoCloud is also suitable for back sleepers of all weights. The buoyancy provided by the latex will keep their spine properly aligned and prevent back pain.

The zone support also aids in preventing back pain. The coils in the perimeter are thinner (15 gauge) while the ones in the center are thicker and firmer (14.5 gauge). This formation ensures that the lumbar spine gets stronger support, which is exactly what back sleepers require, so even those who weigh more than 250 pounds will find the EcoCloud to be stable and comfortable.

Stomach sleepers usually need firmer mattresses to curb sagging in the abdomen area, which will negatively affect their thoracic and lumbar spine.

The EcoCloud is supportive enough for lightweight sleepers. Yet heavier sleepers, especially those who weigh more than 250 pounds, will suffer from over-sinking, which may result in discomfort and pain.

Motion Isolation

Latex-based mattresses don't isolate motion as well as memory foam mattresses, and the EcoCloud is not different in this regard. The latex in its comfort layer is highly responsive to sleepers' body weight, and so it can't absorb a large portion of the kinetic energy generated by their movements.

On the bright side, unlike traditional innerspring systems, the coils in the EcoCloud are individually wrapped, and this reduces motion transfer throughout the mattress.

All in all, unless you're a light sleeper, you won't be disturbed by your partner's minor movements, but you'll certainly feel more intensive movements, such as getting in and out of bed.

Repositioning

The EcoCloud scores high when it comes to repositioning. Sleepers will find it very easy to move on its surface and change sleeping positions. The buoyant Latex will keep them on the mattress instead of in the mattress. The coils will provide them with springiness, which will push them forward.

Edge Support

The EcoCloud is very stable on its edges thanks to the additional double coil layer around its perimeter. The reinforced edges enable sleepers to utilize the entire surface of the mattress with no need to move towards the center in order to avoid sinking.

Heat Retention

The EcoCloud Hybrid is designed to keep sleepers cool and is, therefore, a good choice if you live in areas with a hot and humid climate.

The cotton and wool in the cover are breathable materials, which reduce heat retention. The Talalay latex draws heat away from sleepers' body thanks to its open-cell composition. Lastly, the coils dissipate this heat by enabling the free flow of air through and out of the mattress.

Frame & Foundation

The EcoCloud Hybrid is compatible with most foundations, bed frames and adjustable bases on the market as long as they provide sufficient support. Winkbeds offers you its own foundation. It's a beautiful, stable and, most importantly, easy to assemble platform. Its prices vary from $279 for a Twin size mattress to $369 for a California King mattress.

WinkBeds' Heavy Duty Bed Frame is a robust construct made of fiberglass infused with resin. It can support more than 2,500 pounds. It requires a frame or foundation. A frame for a Twin size mattress costs $150. A frame for A California King mattress is priced at $250.

The Winkbase 2.0 is a single piece adjustable base featuring weightless, zero-G support and a one-touch remote. Its prices range from $949 for a twin XL mattress to $1,399 for a California King Mattress. Its backed by a 10-year limited warranty.

The warranty covers manufacturing and material defects comprised of splits, cracks and impressions on the surface deeper than 1.5''.

The warranty doesn't cover normal wear-and-tear, defects cause by physical abuse or accidental damage caused by burns, cuts, tears or stains. It becomes void if the mattress is maltreated or placed on an improper foundation or frame.

The Bottom Line

If you're looking for a mattress which was manufactured with the aim of minimizing damage to the environment, the EcoCloud is the right choice for you.

It's important to note that opting for an eco-friendly mattress doesn't mean you have to sacrifice quality. Leaving aside environmental considerations, the EcoClouds has excellent performances which provide you with superb sleep experience in almost all parameters. It's not the cheapest mattress you'll find on the market, but high quality doesn't come cheap.
