This is a hybrid mattress which combines foam or latex with a coil system providing improved contouring side-by-side with firm support. Mattress Construction
The WinkBed is a 13.5'' thick. It has 4 layers. The composition of these layers varies according to the mattress' 4 firmness levels: Softer, Luxury Firm, Firmer and Plus.
Cover: All 4 different firmness versions are covered by a 100% natural Tenecel fabric made of eucalyptus. This fabric absorbs moisture cooling the surface of the mattress.
Comfort Layer: The Softer, Luxury Firm and Firmer models have a comfort layer made of a Euro Pillow Top — a 2-layer gel-infused soft poly foam providing the mattress with enhanced contouring. This foam minimizes heat retention.
Beneath the Euro Pillow Top, there are micro-coils adding some bounciness to the mattress. The Softer model also comes with another layer of 2'' low-density poly foam for improved comfort.
The comfort layer of the Plus model consists of hyper-dense (1.8 PCF) poly foam and 2.5'' of elastic latex. This composition increases the mattress' support and responsiveness.
Support Layer: 7.5'' individually encased coils divided into 5 zones in the Softer and Luxury Firm models, 7 zones in the Firmer model and 3 zones in the Plus model. Of all zones, the center area of the mattress is a bit firmer for better back support.
Edge Support Layer: The coils in all the models are placed on and surrounded by hyper-dense (1.8 PCF) poly foam for extra support on the mattress' perimeter and base.
Feel
How you experience the WinkBed depends on your weight and the specific model you're lying on. Generally speaking, the Tenecel fabric which covers all the models makes the mattress cool to the touch.
The combination of soft foam and mini coils in the comfort layer of the Softer, Luxury Firm and Firmer models plus the 7.5'' coils give a balanced feel of contouring and bounciness.
The Softer and the Plus models are two opposites. The former with its extra 2'' layer of low-density poly foam stresses contouring. Sleeping on on it, you'll enjoy a pleasant melting-into-the mattress sensation. The latter lacks soft foam and, instead, uses hardened foam and latex. These materials are meant to stabilize your body. Instead of sinking, you'll feel that you're floating on the mattress.
Pressure Relief
Side Sleepers: The WinkBed is definitely a good fit for side sleepers. The soft Euro Pillow Top found in the Softer, Luxury Firm and Firmer models cushions the sensitive ares in their body, which are more susceptible to pressure — the hips and shoulders.
The micro-coils right beneath the Euro Pillow Top give the mattress bounciness which curbs over-sinking. Together with the 7.5'' zoned coils, they keep the thoracic spine properly aligned and prevent middle back pain.
The Softer model better fits side sleepers whose body weight doesn't exceed 150 pounds. The Luxury Firm and the firmer model are best suited for average weight sleepers.
XL side sleepers should opt for the Plus mattress. The elastic latex in the comfort layer can better respond to their heavier weight replacing contouring with much needed bounciness. The hardened poly foam and the coils in the support layer prevent excessive sinking by generating lift and improving stability.
Back Sleepers: The hybrid composition of the WinkBed is highly beneficial for back sleepers. The contouring foam in the WinkBed's Softer, Luxury Firm and Firmer models and the buoyant latex in the Plus model counter the solid support provided by the coils making sure the mattress is not too firm, which may lead to the accumulation of pressure in the cervical spine.
On the other hand, the hyper-dense poly foam in the comfort layer of the Plus model and the micro-coils in the comfort layer of the other 3 models together with the coil system zone support prevent over-sinking and consequent back pain.
The soft plush feel characteristic of the Softer and the Luxury Firm models will highly appeal to lightweight back sleepers. Average weight back sleeper will need a more solid mattress and so should go for the Firmer model. Sleepers weighing more than 250 pounds ought to choose the Plus model, which can hold them best.
Stomach Sleepers: Stomach Sleepers need a firmer mattress to prevent excessive sinking in the abdomen area. They also require some cushioning in that area to curb the accumulation of pressure there.
The WinkBed does exactly that. The soft Euro Pillow Top and micro-coils in the comfort layer of the Softer, Luxury Firm and Firmer models and the latex and dense poly foam in the Plus model create a good balance of support and responsiveness. The zone coils system in all models strongly support the body's midsection, which is great for stomach sleepers.
Because of stomach sleepers' need for a more solid mattress, lightweight ones should choose the Luxury Firm model. The Firmer model with its extra layer of 2'' low-density poly foam may be too soft for them.
Average weight stomach sleepers should opt for the firmer and even the Plus model. Plus-size sleepers will find the Plus model to be the most suitable for their weight.
Motion Isolation
Coils in hybrid mattresses transfer motion and become squeaky with time. However, the WinkBed's coils are individually encased, which reduces motion transfer.
Going into specifics, the WinkBed's Softer, Luxury Firm and Firmer models isolate motion well. The 2-layer gel-infused soft poly foam, which make up the Euro Pillow Top in their comfort layer, absorbs a large portion of the kinetic energy generated by sleepers' movements. The extra 2'' low-density poly foam in the Softer model increases the mattress' capacity for motion isolation even further.
The Plus model less effectively curbs motion transfer. The hard poly foam and the elastic latex in its comfort layer don't absorb sleepers movements as well as the softer foam in the other models. Put differently, you'll probably won't be disturbed by your partner's minor movements throughout the night, but if he/she is a restless sleeper, you shouldn't rely on the mattress to help you sleep peacefully.
Repositioning
The Softer, Luxury Firm and Firmer models have a thick layer of soft foam, which may hinder movement. The extra layer of soft foam in the Softer model generates greater resistance and make repositioning even harder.
The firmness of the Plus model and its responsiveness provided by the latex let sleepers, including heavier ones, reposition themselves with little difficulty.
Edge Support
The hardened poly foam edge support layer found in all of the WinkBed's four models make the mattress significantly firmer on its perimeter minimizing sagging and increasing potential sleep surface.
The Plus model offers better edge support due to its firmer comfort layer. This model is especially designed to provide heavyweight sleepers with stability all over the mattress, at the center and on the perimeter.
Heat Retention
The Winkbed also does a wonderful job dissipating excessive heat. The Tenecel fabric, which covers all the models, facilitate moisture wicking keeping sleepers' body cool at the points where it touches the mattress. The 7.5'' coils also aid in moisture wicking by enabling free flow of air.
Apart from that, the gel-infused poly foam which make up the Euro Pillow Top in the Softer, Luxury Firm and Firmer models draws heat from sleepers body and disperses it across the mattress. The micro-coils, much like the bigger coils in the support layer, enable air flow which regulates temperature.
The Plus model doesn't have the Euro Pillow Top and the micro-coils, but the latex it contains with its open-cell structure, is highly breathable giving sleeper a refreshing cool feel.
Frame & Foundation
You can use almost any foundation available on the market for your WinkBed, including a boxspring or a or a platform bed frame with slats. You'll have to make sure that the foundation you've chosen is solid enough to support the mattress. Frames require strong center support.
WinkBeds offers you its own designed and manufactured foundation. It's made of high-quality materials providing solid support and durability. Its prices start from $279 for a Twin size mattress and end at $369 for a California King mattress.
If you're looking for an exceptionally supportive platform, you should opt for WinkBeds' Heavy Duty Bed Frame. This solid frame is made of fiberglass infused resin and is capable of holding more than 2,500 pounds. Take into account that it requires a foundation or a boxspring.
The prices of the Heavy Duty Bed Frame range from $150 for a Twin mattress to $250 for King and California King mattresses.
The WinkBed is also compatible with adjustable bases. The Adjustable Winkbase 2.0 put at your disposal by WinkBeds is a lightweight single piece adjustable base easy to assemble. It can be used for Twin XL, Queen, King and California King mattresses. Its prices are $949, $999 and $1,399 respectively. It's backed by a 10-year limited warranty.
