Mattress Construction

The Saatva Zenhaven mattress is made up of four layers of natural Talalay latex covered and held together by a quilted organic cotton cover, under which is a fire barrier made of organic wool. This is a natural solution of the fire retardancy standards required by law in the US, and is achieved entirely without the use of chemicals. This construction also makes the mattress flippable, giving it two distinct sides with differing levels of firmness.

A look into the mattress layers of the Saatva Zenhaven

Cover: A plush quilted cover made of organic cotton and wool. It's soft, breathable, and naturally hypoallergenic. On top of this, it's treated with Saatva's trademarked Guardian botanical antimicrobial treatment, which inhibit the growth of bacteria, mold, and mildew.

Luxury-Plush Layer: A 1.5" latex layer of medium firmness comprised of five distinct zones of density that provide enhanced support in the lumbar region and maximum pressure-point relief. Completely natural and hypoallergenic.

Two Mid Layers: Twin 3" natural latex layers give the mattress a highly resilient and durable base. There's zero use of petroleum-based or polyurethane foams here, unlike with most foam mattress bases used today.

Gentle-Firm Layer: Just like the Luxury-Plush layer, this 1.5" medium-firm layer is comprised of a 5-zone natural latex that gives you enhanced lower back support and pressure-point relief where you need it. The latex on this side is firmer than the one one the Luxury-Plush side.

Feel

The Saatva Zenhaven mattress has a medium feel on the Luxury-Plush side, and a medium-firm feel on the Gentle-Firm side. It has a shallow cushioning depth on both sides, though the Luxury-Plush side lets you sink in a bit more. Since it's entirely made of latex, it's also, unsurprisingly, very responsive and not bouncy. The cover felt very plush and nice to the touch on both sides, and provides ample comfort in all sleeping positions.

Pressure Relief

The Saatva Zenhaven has great pressure relief on both of its sides, though some sleepers will get more from one side than the other. Side sleepers will usaully feel more comfortable on the Luxury-Plush side since it lets their shoulders and hips sink in a bit more and keeps their spine properly aligned. Stomach sleepers will commonly feel more comfortable on the Gentle-Firm side, as it keeps their lumbar region straight and doesn't let them sink in too much into the mattress, and thus doesn't suffocate them. Back sleepers will probably feel just as comfortable on both sides, and will usually pick one of them based on taste, and at times even flip the mattress when the mood for a change hits them.

Motion Isolation

The motion transfer quality of the Saatva Zenhaven is incredibly low, which is fairly standard for full latex mattresses. If you sleep next to a partner who moves around a lot during sleep, or either you or your partner are restless sleepers, then this mattress will be a good fit for you.

Repositioning

Repositioning on the Saatva Zenhaven is easy due to how responsive it is, but it's not exceptional since the mattress has no bounce. So, while it's good for intimacy, and changing positions during sex won't tire you out, it won't help you out in this either. If you want a bouncier mattress that is absolutely fantastic for intimacy, then you should try out a bouncier mattress, such as the Saatva Latex Hybrid.

Edge Support

While there is no reinforced perimeter to the mattress, the edge support of the Saatva Zenhaven is quite solid even without it. You will easily be able to use the entire surface area of the mattress without fear of falling of unless you are very heavy.

Heat Retention

Latex, in general, has less heat retention than, say, memory foam, and this mattress isn't soft enough to contour to your body and so leaves you with ample surface area for regulating your body temperature. The latex of the Zenhaven is also perforated for better breathability, and the cover is made of wool, which is fantastic for heat regulation. While hybrid and spring mattresses do sleep cooler, the Zenhaven performs fairly well even when compared to them.

Frame & Foundation

The Zenhaven compatible with most foundations, box springs, platform beds, and adjustable bases, so if you already own such a thing and are looking to simply replace your mattress, you can place your new Saatva mattress on your old foundation.

But, if you want to purchase a new foundation to go along with your new premium mattress, you can do so on the Saatva online store. The standard Saatva foundation costs $200-$418 (depending on the size of the mattress). The foundation is a wood slat designed to look seamless with your Saatva mattress. It comes in two height options (either 4.75″ or 8.75″) so you can better adjust it to your needs. You can add to that a metal frame for $119 that will lift your bed setup 7.5" off the ground, giving you more storage room beneath the bed.

You can also purchase a designer foundation and frame from the Saatva store. This is mainly for decorative purposes, but they are nevertheless incredibly well made and luxurious, and can add a lot to the aesthetic of your room. There are around a dozen to choose from, each one with their own style and price tag, so check the online store if you're in the market for such a thing.

Lastly, you can also purchase Saatva's Lineal Adjustable Bed Base for $1,119. This adjustable foundation will allow you to elevate the bed's head and feet sections, and includes full-body massage capabilities along with underbed illumination.

Additional Details

By and large, the mattress is almost made from natural materials. The latex comes from rubber trees and is certified to the OEKO TEX standard, which is a third-party European standard that ensures that no harmful materials are present in the mattress. You won't even experience any off-gassing or chemical smell when you receive it.

Saatva usually offers up to $450 in discounts - a discount that increases with the size of your purchase. At minimum, you'll receive a $200 discount if you go with the cheapest option (Twin seized mattress and nothing else). The official Saatva website also offers holiday discounts and even an 18-month payment plan, so you can get your own luxury Saatva Zenhaven mattress even if money is tight at the moment.

In addition to this, Saatva offers a $225 discount off orders of $1,000 or more to active military, veterans, first responders, and teachers. To apply for the discount, you'll need to click on the "Discount for Military, First Responders, and Teachers" box at checkout when purchasing the mattress. You'll then be prompted to register with ID.me to verify your status and receive the discount.

Shipping & Delivery

The Saatva Zenhaven mattress is built to order before being hand delivered to your bedroom, where delivery professionals will set it up for you if you so request. If you have an older bed you want to get rid off, the delivery professionals can do that for you at no additional cost.

If the mattress can't fit up your staircase, Saatva will exchange it for one that will, or take it back and issue a refund with only a $99 charge that covers the cost of labor and gas for the delivery.

Unlike other online mattress companies, Saatva doesn't sell compressed mattresses. Since a Saatva mattress isn't a bed-in-a-box, there will be no need to wait for the Zenhaven mattress to decompress or off-gas, so you can use it immediately upon its arrival.

The mattress takes about 3 weeks to arrive from the date of purchase due to the custom nature of each order. You will get a call from the delivery company the day before your chosen delivery date. You won’t be charged a fee if you cancel the order during this call. The mattress can be shipped anywhere within the contiguous United States for free. If you live in Hawaii or Alaska, you can contact Saatva's help center at 877-672-2882 for help scheduling a special delivery through a freight forwarder in Seattle or California. Saatva has unfortunately stopped all deliveries across the border to Canada due to the damage the Covid-19 pandemic has done to its supply chain.

Returns & Warranty

Once you purchase the Zenhaven, you can try it out for 180 nights. If you don't like it and you decide to replace it before the end of that period, you may do so for only $99. This is a labor and transport fee, as Saatva delivery professionals will come and pick up the mattress from your bedroom for you.

Saatva offers a 15-year warranty for its Zenhaven mattress. If the mattress is deemed defective and returned within the first 2 years after purchase, it will be replaced with a brand new one. If it is returned after this time, it will instead be repaired for $198. This covers the total cost of shipment both ways.

There is an additional warranty option, called the "Fairness Replacement Option". You will be sent a mattress of the same model for a fraction of how much the old one cost you, based on the age of the mattress: 40% of what you paid if the mattress was purchased 3-5 years ago, 60% of what you paid if the mattress was purchased 5-10 years ago, or 80% of what you paid if the mattress was purchased 11-15 years ago. You will also be charged $99 for shipping, and you'll be able to keep the old mattress. This option is only available once per customer.

A warranty by Saatva is only valid to the original purchaser, and will be voided if the mattress is misused or neglected, such as if the mattress was regularly used without a foundation or is damaged from burns or spills.

The Bottom Line

This is one of the most affordably priced mattress made of natural materials, has strong support and pressure relief as well as heat wicking and motion isolation, and is responsive enough to be good for intimacy. By and large, if the feel of the mattress will suit you, this will be a fantastic choice 9 times out of 10 for its purchasers, especially considering Saatva's generous warranty and returns policy.
