Saatva Youth Mattress Review
As its name suggests, the Saatva Youth is a mattress designed for the developing body of a child, specifically between the ages 3 to 12. It is dual sided, meaning that it is actually two beds in one, and was constructed in this way to adapt to your child's growth, eliminating the need for you to purchase a new mattress as they mature and their body changes.
Pros & Cons
Pros
- Perfectly suited for a developing child
- Water resistant, which means accident proof
- Hypoallergenic and antimicrobial
- Exemplary shipment and warranty policies
Cons
- A bit pricey for a child's bed
- Slowly turns obsolete once the child becomes a teenager
Mattress Construction
The Saatva Youth is a dual-sided hybrid mattress that is designed to be the only bed your child will ever need. Every layer of the mattress is either dual-sided or has a corresponding layer on the other side of the mattress, creating a supportive bed that transitions to fit the child's needs as they develops into adolescence.
Cover Layer: The top layer of the Years 3-7 side is a soft, breathable and water-resistant cover made of organic cotton. It protects the mattress against spills and accidents a child would be prone to, keeping the mattress free of stains and bacteria. It is also treated with Saatva's trademarked Guardian antimicrobial treatment, which further inhibits the growth of bacteria, mold and mildew.
Foam Layer: This foam layer is CertiPUR-US certified, meaning that it's 100% of all harmful substances, and features a 5-zone support makeup that makes the mattress firmer in its center third. This helps maintain proper spinal alignment for younger children, which is important for encouraging proper growth.
Innerspring Layer: The Saatva Youth's most center layer is the only dual-sided layer of the mattress. It is an innerspring layer made out of a mesh of strong yet flexible steel coils. Keeps the mattress a medium-firm, which is optimal for a child's growing body.
The difference between the two sides is the foam layer, which is softer on the 8-12 side, offering better cushioning and support for a child who's now larger and heavier.
The Youth mattress is only available in 3 sizes (Twin, Twin XL and Full), though, for a child, that's more than enough.
Feel
The Saatva Youth has a medium-firm feel with low cushioning depth and quick responsiveness. These are the most suitable characteristics for a children's mattress to have, and are proven to be the healthiest for their developing bodies.
Pressure Relief
The mattress offers enough pressure relief for almost all children ages 3-12, and is dual-sided for this exact reason. After a child reaches a certain age, they will need a softer mattress due to their increased mass and size, and the Saatva Youth wonderfully account for that.
The mattress promotes a neutral spinal alignment in children, and will fit nearly all back, stomach and combination sleeper (which account for most children). Strict side sleepers should also feel fairly comfortable on this Saatva mattress, as most children don't weigh enough to need a softer mattress in order to sleep comfortably on their side.
Motion Isolation
The Saatva Youth's motion isolation qualities are pretty decent, but since this is mostly important for couples, your child won't care much about this, and neither should you.
Repositioning
This, your child will care much more about. Children tend to move much more than adults during sleep, so a mattress with good ease of repositioning is preferable for them. The Saatva Youth is very responsive and bouncy, which is exactly what you'll want for your child, and also what your child would probably prefer for themselves.
Edge Support
The edge support of the Saatva Youth is great, especially on the 8-12 side, since your child will need a stronger edge due to their increased weight. This is mainly thanks to the 8-12 foam layer, which features a reinforced edge. This will keep your child from falling off the bed, and allow you to sit comfortably on it when reading them bedtime stories or tucking them in.
Heat Retention
The Saatva Youth's cooling capabilities will suffice the needs of most kids. The foams were designed to wick away and disperse heat, and the air within innerspring layer helps in this regard as well. If your child sleeps particularly hot, though, you should look into copper-infused mattress covers to better help them sleep cool.
Frame & Foundation
The Saatva Youth can be supported by a standard box spring or solid platform foundation, but Saatva recommends their own custom foundation, specifically made for the non-standard construction of the Youth mattress. This $200 foundation is available in two heights: 4.75" and 8.75", and you can add a metal frame to it for decorative purposes for $119.
Additional Details
Saatva offers up to $450 in discounts, but since it goes up with the size of the purchase and the mattress is fairly cheap when compared to Saatva's other mattresses, you'll only get a discount of $200, and only if you also purchase something else alongside it (such as a foundation and a metal frame) so the purchase exceeds $1,000.
In addition to this discount, Saatva offers a $225 discount off orders of $1,000 or more to active military, veterans, first responders, and teachers. To apply for the discount, you'll need to click on the "Discount for Military, First Responders, and Teachers" box at checkout when purchasing the mattress. You'll then be prompted to register with ID.me to verify your status and receive the discount.
Shipping & Delivery
The Saatva Youth mattress is tailored to your specifications before being hand delivered past your doorstep and your child's bedroom, where the delivery professionals will also set it up for you. If the new mattress can’t fit up your staircase, Saatva will exchange it for one of a different size or height, or take it back at no charge to you and issue a refund with only a $99 charge that covers the cost of labor and gas for the delivery. If your child had an older bed you want to get rid off, the delivery professionals can do that for you at no additional cost.
Unlike other online mattress companies, Saatva doesn't sell compressed mattresses. There will be no need to wait for the mattress to decompress or off-gas, which is all the better, since kids are generally very sensitive to smells — especially chemical smells.
You will get a call from the delivery company the day before your chosen delivery date. If you need to cancel, you won’t be charged a fee. Due to the custom nature of each order, the mattress takes about 3 weeks to arrive from the date of purchase. The mattress can be shipped anywhere within the US for free, though the company currently does not ship directly to Hawaii or Alaska. If you live in one of these areas, you can contact Saatva's help center at 877-672-2882 for help scheduling a special delivery through a freight forwarder in Seattle or California. Saatva has unfortunately stopped all deliveries across the border to Canada due to the damage the Covid-19 pandemic has done to its supply chain.
Returns & Warranty
Let’s face it. Kids aren't very careful around appliances and furniture, and tend to shorten the lifespan of most items considerably. Thankfully, the Saatva Youth mattress is designed to last the entire 9 years between ages 3-12. Its coils, for once, can definitely take a beating, which is perfect for children who may use their bed as a trampoline just as much as they use it for sleep. The quality of the bed's foam is also above and beyond what you would normally find in a kid's mattress, and should last even under the care of a child.
In addition to these, though, Saatva offers a 12 year warranty with the Youth mattress, which is more than you'll probably need, and which covers any damage naturally caused to the mattress. You can also let your kid try it out for 180 nights, and if they don't like it and you decide to replace it before the end of that period, you may do so for only $99. This is a labor and transport fee, as Saatva delivery professionals will come and pick up the mattress from your house for you. The $99 fee will also apply if you just want to trade for a different mattress that may better suit your child or the measurements of their room. Do make sure to measure things beforehand, though.
The Bottom Line
If you're looking for the best and most luxurious mattress for your kid, you've now found it. This is really an all-in-one package when it comes to your child's sleeping needs, and if you have the funds for it, then you should definitely buy it. It's healthy for your child's development, is built to last, is hypoallergenic, antimicrobial and accident proof, and is one of the simplest purchases you'll make. No need for any carrying or set-up on your part — just click purchase, sit back, and watch Saatva do everything for you. You have a kid — you deserve the break.
