It has every certification needed to ensure that it's 100% eco-friendly and healthy for your small child to sleep on, and, while it is somewhat pricey for a crib mattress, its make and materials more than justify its asking price.

Mattress Construction

The Nest Bedding Stork is composed of two identical layers of organic cotton and wool that serve as its top and bottom sides, and an organic latex core that serves as its main support unit. The materials it is made of are entirely natural, and are not petroleum based.

Top and bottom layers: Both the top and bottom layers of the Stork mattress are identical. Each is 0.5" thick and made from quilted organic wool and cotton, providing a soft, cozy feel and enabling you to flip the mattress to increase its longevity.

Middle layer: This 4" layer serves as the base and main support unit of the Stork mattress. Since toddlers not only need to sleep on their back to reduce the risk of SIDS, they also need a mattress that's firm enough to be comfortable for such a sleeping position. To support the healthy development of your toddler's body, this layer is therefore made from extra dense natural latex.

Feel

The Nest Bedding Stork crib mattress has a firm and responsive feel, which according to doctors and experts is best for infants and toddlers. It is also quite soft at its very sides thanks to its quilted bottom and top layers, which will help soothe your child.

Safety and Certifications

The Nest Bedding Stork crib mattress is recommended for children up to the age of three. Once your child is old enough to move out of their crib, they'll need a big kid mattress like the Nest Bedding Puffin or the Nest Bedding Lark.

The quilted cotton and wool sides are GOTS certified, while the latex at the core of the mattress is GOLS certified. This ensures that the mattress is indeed made entirely out of natural, organic materials, and is free from synthetic fillers and toxic materials. Nest Bedding also makes sure to off-gas the mattress in the factory prior to packaging, which minimizes VOCs which could irritate your child's airways. In fact, the Stork mattress is actually GREENGUARD Gold certified, which is a difficult certification for a mattress to get since it requires it to contain absolutely no toxic compounds and emit almost no VOCs. To put it into perspective, a product with this certification is acceptable for use in environments such as schools and health care facilities. The certified lack of toxic chemicals is something every crib mattress should have, but the low amount of VOC emissions is also noteworthy. Since the smaller they are, the more sensitive they are to sensory stimuli, this will help them get accustomed to the mattress faster and fall asleep quicker.

Lastly, the fabric layers on both ends of the mattress act as natural fire barriers. While your kid will probably not be smoking in bed, this is still plus.

Accident Proofing

While the top and bottom layers of the mattress are fire proof, they are by no means spill proof. Use a mattress cover, or better yet, get Nest Bedding's Extend accident protection plan, an insurance which covers stains from food, drink, and bodily fluids, as well as accidental damage such as cuts and punctures. Since you'll only need the 3-year plan, it will only cost you $40. Considering how much it can save you, and how prone babies are to accidents, it's a steal.

Growth Accommodation

The Nest Bedding Stork manages to accommodate the growth of your child without the need for two distinct sides for different ages. You can flip the mattress to extend its lifespan, but you won't need to worry about doing so at a particular time. Your child will always be comfortable on the mattress, no matter how big the little one gets.

Edge Support

The Nest Bedding Stork has just enough edge support to make sure your kid doesn't sink when sleeping near the mattress' edges, and will never be in any danger of falling off of it. Still, you should get a standard crib foundation with slatted walls, as is recommended by pretty much everyone.

Heat Retention

The Stork doesn't retain much heat, and is rather temperature neutral, which is best in most seasons for a baby. The quilted sides are fantastically breathable, which reduces sweating and discomfort that may stem from it, and the core is made of latex, which has great heat dissipation qualities.

Frame & Foundation

The Stork crib mattress will fit any standard or convertible crib you may have. If you have a hand-me-down from a family member or a friend, it will probably work well with the mattress. If you don't, you'll have to get one elsewhere, since Nest Bedding unfortunately doesn't make their own cribs, and only sells crib mattresses separately.

Additional Details

The Nest Stork is built by hand and to order in Nest Bedding's eco-friendly Northern California factory. It takes them 6-7 weeks to produce a mattress once it's ordered. While it's usually available in the standard rectangle shape, it's also available in an oval shaped. If you prefer your Stork mattress to be oval shaped to, say, fit a certain crib you may already own, then you can email Nest Bedding's sales team at @nestbedding.com, since their oval-shaped crib mattresses are only available upon request, and are not sold on the Nest Bedding website.

Returns & Warranty

Nest Bedding is one of the only companies in the world that grants a limited lifetime warranty for each of their mattresses, the Stork included. As always, misuse and negligence, such as tears and damage done to the mattress outside of proper use and natural wear, will void this warranty.

In addition, you'll have 30 nights in which you can try the mattress out and see how well your child adjusts to it. If it isn't to their liking, you can return it for free up to a full year after purchase.

The Bottom Line

The Nest Bedding Stork may be a tad bit more expensive than some alternatives, but it's one of the safest and healthiest mattresses you can get for your newborn. It's eco-friendly and completely natural and organic, and, while it make take time to produce and deliver, it's worth both the price and the wait. You're already planning things way in advance prior to the birth, such as making sure the baby has a room and will be well taken care of once they come into this world. There's no reason not to plan ahead for the bed they'll spend most of their infancy in, which in general will be most of their time, and make this investment if you can afford its asking price.
