Mattress Construction

The Nest Bedding Raven mattress is 10'' thick. All in all, it's built from five layers. Each side, the medium and the firm, has two foam-based layers. In between, there is a supporting coil system.

The layers of the Nest Raven

The Medium Firmness Side

Cover: 1" of soft 4 lb. quilting poly foam. Despite it's softness, the foam is highly resilient and can maintain its shape and elasticity over time.

Comfort Layer: 1" of gel infused memory foam which molds to sleepers' body alleviating pressure. The gel helps dissipate excess heat.

The Firm Side

Cover: 1" of quilting poly foam identical to the foam in the cover of the medium firmness side.

Transition Layer: 1" of high density (32 ILD) poly foam curbing sinking and increasing sleepers' stability while lying on the mattress.

Both Sides' Support Layer: 6" individually encased steel coils separating the mattress' different sides. The coils provide bounce and generate lift. They're reinforced around the perimeter for enhanced edge support. A Twin size mattress includes 544 coils; a California King size mattress has 1,034 coils.

Feel

The soft poly foam which makes up the cover of the Raven's both sides cushions the body. In addition to being soft, this foam is a bit elastic, which gives it a bouncy feel.

The malleable memory foam in the comfort layer of the mattress' medium firmness side enables moderate sinking, which pleasantly contours and cradles the body. The coils right below counter this sinking making sure sleepers won't plunge too deeply and get stuck in the mattress.

The Raven's firm side has an opposite feel. Being much stiffer, it provides minimum contouring and delivers maximum support. Sleepers lying on it feel highly stable. Because of the lack of cushioning, the effect of the coils is more noticeable. Accordingly, the firm side is much bouncier.

Pressure Relief

The Raven mattress' medium firmness side is a good fit for side sleepers of all weights. These sleepers need a highly contouring mattress to cushion sensitive areas in their body — the hips and shoulders in particular. The soft and supple poly foam in the cover and the body-conforming memory foam in the comfort layer will target these areas and prevent the accumulation of pressure. Heavier side sleepers who are more prone to sinking, will be supported by the mattress' coils system.

Back sleepers who weigh up to 250 pounds will also feel comfortable on the Raven's medium firmness side. The soft poly foam in the cover and the memory foam in the comfort layer will wrap their low and middle back releasing pressure. The coils will elevate their body and keep their spine properly aligned.

Back sleepers whose weight exceeds 250 pounds will sag too deeply lying on the Raven's medium firmness side. They'll require the support delivered by the firm side to remain 'on' the mattress and feel stable.

Stomach sleepers get along well with a mattress capable of supporting the area below their rib cage, where they tend to sink most. The Raven's 6'' coil system will deliver sufficient support for lightweight stomach sleepers while the soft memory foam in the medium firmness side will envelop these sleepers' waistline and hips relieving pressure and soothing the abdominal muscle.

Stomach sleepers heavier than150 pounds and especially those whose weight is close to or more than 250 pounds will require a more solid mattress to counter excess sagging, which may result in curvature disorders. The high density poly foam in the the transition layer of the Raven's firm side combined with the lift generated by the coils will give these sleepers the right amount of support.

Motion Isolation

The Raven mattress' medium firmness side isolates motion quite well. The soft poly foam in the cover and the contouring memory foam in the comfort layer absorb a large portion of the energy created by sleepers' movements. The energy which isn't absorbed reaches the coils in the support layer. Since these coils are individually encased, they have lower capacity for motion transfer compared to traditional spring systems.

The Raven's firm side is a different story. The poly foam in the cover isolates motion as well as it does on the medium firmness side. However, the hardened poly foam in the transition layer is responsive to sleepers body and so transfers a lot of kinetic energy to the coils, which is more than they can handle despite being individually encased. Put differently, the firm side isn't the best choice for sleepers who wake up every time their partner tosses and turns.

Repositioning

The Raven mattress' medium firmness side is more contouring and sinkable than the firm side. That won't affect much lightweight sleepers. They won't have a problem changing their sleeping positions as the coils will elevate their body preventing them from being trapped in bed. Heavier sleepers, on the other hand, may find it more difficult to maneuver on the mattress' surface.

The Raven's firm side is far better than the medium side when it comes to ease of movement. The enhanced capacity of the dense poly foam's in its transition layer to curb sinking together with the bounce and lift generated by the coils will enable sleepers, including the heavier ones, to reposition themselves without exerting too much effort.

Edge Support

A transition layer based on highly dense poly foam makes the perimeter of the Raven mattress' firm side more solid than the perimeter of the medium firmness side with its comfort layer of conforming memory foam. Having said that, the edges of the Raven are well supported regardless of the mattress side. That is because the coils are reinforced around the exterior and so promise stability to sleepers lying away from the center.

Heat Retention

Like all hybrid mattresses, the Raven mattress doesn't retain much heat. Its coil system enables free circulation of air, which cools the mattress. The medium firmness side traps more heat than the firm side due to being more sinkable. However, the gel in its memory foam does a good job dissipating this heat. In light of that, we can say that the Raven is a good choice for people who tend to sleep hot or who live in hot and humid areas.

Frame & Foundation

The Raven mattress can be put on most of the foundations, frames and adjustable bases available on the market as long as they're capable of supporting its weight. If you plan to use a slat bed, you'll have to make sure the gap between the slats doesn't exceed 4''.

If you choose to purchase on of the Nest Bedding mattresses, there is quite an impressive selection to choose from, starting with the Bi-Fold Platform Foundation is an easy to assemble robust steel construct consolidated by heavy-duty wire latticework. It comes with a 12-leg system capable of carrying a maximum weight of 2,000 pounds. It can be stored in tight places thanks to its bi-fold design.

The HomeBase Foundation can function as a box spring as well as a platform bed. It's built from untreated pinewood and resilient polyester. Similar to the Bi-Fold Platform, it can be assembled quickly and easily. It's offered in two heights of 5'' and 8'' and in three colors — black, sand and grey. The foundation is equipped with USB power kits.

The Rustic Platform consists of 100% reclaimed wood. It comes in three water-based finishes of Raw, Whitewash and Greywash.

The Azara Bed Frame has a beautiful mid-century design. It's crafted from Moso solid bamboo wood and is available in a Sable or a Caramelized finish. Unlike all other Nest Bedding's platform, it's made in China. It's designed for Queen and King mattress sizes only.

The Arcadian Bed Frame is manufactured from reclaimed wood and is available in three water-based Raw, Whitewash and Greywash finishes.

The warranty doesn't cover minor imperfections like slight cosmetic flaws, naturally occurring aromas from the foam, normal wear-and-tear and physical and accidental damage, e.g. stains, tears and burning mark.

Maltreating the mattress, placing it on an improper or inadequately supportive foundation and purchasing it from a non-authorized Nest Bedding distributor may invalidate the warranty.

You may choose to extended the warranty to cover cuts, punctures and stains from food, drink and body fluids. This extra coverage will cost you $49.99, 69.99 and $89.99 for three, five and ten years respectively.

The Bottom Line

The Raven mattress' two different firmness levels on two sides make it fit sleepers with different needs. It's medium firmness sides is ideal for those seeking the cradling sensation of memory foam together with the supportive bounce delivered by a coil system. The firm side is designed for XL sleepers who require a solid mattress, which can effectively curb excess sinkage and carry their body mass.
