Naturepedic Serenade Organic Hybrid Mattress Review

Last updated December 05, 2024

The Naturepedic Serenade Organic Hybrid is an eco-friendly latex and coils mattress offering improved pressure relieving bounce and strong support. The combination of both of these qualities makes it a great fit for average and especially heavyweight sleepers.

The Serenade comes in two firmness levels of cushion-firm and firm to better meet the comfort needs of different types of sleepers. Equally important, the mattress enables a healthy night's sleep as it's made of natural and organic materials without polyurethane foam and other synthetic additives.

Mattress Construction

The Naturepedic Serenade is 11'' thick. It's has a cotton and wool cover on top of elastic latex and a set of steel coils inserted between two layers of cotton. The difference between the cushion-firm and the firm models lies in the density level of the latex.

The layers of the Naturepedic Serenade Organic Hybrid

Cover: A quilt containing plush cotton and wool infused with 100% plants-based pla fiber. These materials are highly breathable wicking away body heat.

Comfort Layer: 2'' of supple latex providing pressure relieving bounce. The latex in the cushion-firm model is of medium-high density. The firm model contains high density latex.

Transition Layer: Cotton fabric separating the coils below from the latex above.

Support Layer: 8'' individually encased steel coils generating lift reducing sinkage.

Base Layer: Cotton batting separating the coils from the mattress' encasement

Encasement: Cotton fabric + cotton fill.

Feel

The Naturepedic Serenade's cover is gentle and soft-to-the-touch. The breathable cotton, wool and pla fiber it's made of keep the surface of the mattress cool and dry even after many hours of sleep.

The cushion-firm model is cushier than the firm model. It pads the body enhancing comfort. It does that almost without causing sinkage thanks to the responsive latex in the comfort layer. As can be expected, the firm model is much stiffer and can better resist sagging keeping sleepers highly stable on the mattress. The coils in the support layer of both firmness models add a springy feel to the mattress.

Pressure Relief

Both firmness models of the Naturepedic Serenade are too rigid for side sleepers weighing up to 250 pounds. These sleepers require cushier mattress capable of relieving pressure in their hips and shoulders.

Those that are looking for a suitable mattress for heavier sleepers are going to like the cushion-firm model. The medium density latex in its comfort layer will deliver pressure reliving bounce targeting their hips and shoulders. Together with the coils in the support layer, it'll elevate these areas in their body enabling them to maintain a healthy position at night.

Light and average weight back sleepers will get along fine with the Serenade's cushion-firm model. The mattress' elastic latex will cushion their lumbar back mitigating pressure. The lift the coils generate will keep all sections of their spine properly aligned.

Heavyweight back sleepers will need a firmer mattress to prevent excess sinkage. The Serenade's firm model is supportive enough and will fulfill this function well.

The Serenade's cushion-firm model will appeal to stomach sleepers weighing less than 250 pounds. The cotton and wool quilt covering the mattress will pad their abdomen while the latex in the comfort layer will provide ample bounce reducing pressure in their lower back. The coils on their part will lift their waist and hips enabling their spine to rest in its neutral position.

XL stomach sleepers whose weight exceeds 250 pounds will prefer the Serenade's firm model. It can better carry their massive body averting excess sagging, especially in the area below their rib cage.

Motion Isolation

Motion isolation is the Naturepedic Serenade's weak spot. The soft cotton and wool quilt in its cover is too thin to function as a shock absorber capable of isolating sleepers' movements. The bouncy latex in the comfort layer will respond to these movements by generating too much kinetic energy for the cotton fabric in the transition layer to absorb. The coils below will respond to that energy by vibrating. Because the coils are individually encased, their capacity for motion transfer is much lower compared to traditional innerspring systems, but their vibrations will still be felt by most sleepers whose partners tend to toss and turn a lot during the night.

Repositioning

Moving on the surface of the Naturepedic Serenade's firm model is easier in comparison to the cushion-firm model due to the former being less sinkable. Yet both models enable exceptional ease of movement. The bouncy latex in their comfort layer and the lift generated by the coils in their support layer will prevent sleepers from being trapped in bed, and so they'll need to exert very little effort into changing their positions.

Edge Support

The springy latex in the Naturepedic Serenade's comfort layer reduces sinkage around the perimeter. The 8'' coils further stabilizes the edges. As a result, sleepers will feel highly secure lying away from the mattress center. Having said that, the heavier ones weighing more than 250 pounds may experience some sagging around the exterior of the cushion-firm model. The firm model will deliver greater edge support and will better carry their massive body.

Heat Retention

The Naturepedic Serenade effectively regulates temperature making it a mattress ideal for hot sleepers or for those who live in hot and humid areas. The latex in the mattress is much less sinkable than foam so it retains very little heat. The cotton, wool and pla fiber in the cover neutralize body heat and wick it away. The two additional layers of breathable cotton keep the mattress well aerated. Finally, the coils facilitate air circulation aiding in the cooling process.

Frame & Foundation

The Naturepedic Serenade is compatible with almost any foundation, frame or adjustable base you'll find on the market as long as it's strong enough to support it. If you plan to use a slat bed, you'll have to ensure that the gap between the slats doesn't exceed 3''.

Naturepedic manufactures and sells its own Delux Organic Bed Foundation. This easy to assemble foundation is made of solid wood and knit cotton. It has extra slats for additional support. The foundation is available in either 2'' ultra-low profile or in a standard 7'' profile. It's shipped for free and comes with a 100-night trial and a 25-year limited warranty.
