Layla Memory Foam Mattress Review
The Layla Memory Foam, as its name suggests, is a highly contouring all-foam mattress designed to provide a warm-hug feeling. What makes it special is that by flipping it, you get two types of mattresses with different firmness levels, which will appeal to different types of sleepers.
Pros & Cons
Pros
- A flippable mattress with two firmness levels
- 3-zone SMT technology provides better pressure relief
- Offers excellent motion isolation
- Effectively dissipates body heat
- Comes with a lifetime warranty
Cons
- Not supportive enough on the edges
- Repositioning is a bit difficult
Mattress Construction
The Layla Memory Foam has two sides, soft and firm. While the cover and support layer remain the same, the comfort layer depends on the side that faces up.
Cover: 66% polyester, 30% viscose and 4% lycra infused with ThermoGel cooling agent aiding in reducing heat buildup.
Support Layer: 4.5'' of medium-density (1.5 PCF) poly foam.
Soft Side Facing up
Comfort Layer: 3'' of medium-soft density (3.5 PCF) memory foam infused with copper gel increasing the mattress' capacity to respond to body pressure while maintaining its softness.
Transition Layer: 2'' of medium-density (1.65 PCF) poly foam using 3-zone SMT technology for enhanced point pressure relief.
Firm Side Facing up
Comfort Layer: 1'' of medium-soft density (3.5 PCF) copper-infused memory foam.
Feel
The surface of the mattress is cool to the touch thanks to the ThermoGel cooling agent in the cover, which dissipates body heat.
Lying on the mattress for a couple of minutes, you'll enjoy the soft plush feel the silk-like viscose and elastic lycra give. The memory foam will let you pleasantly sink into the mattress giving you a cradling sensation.
Sleeping on the soft side, sinkage is much deeper compared to the firm side which provides a more balanced feel of contouring and support.
Pressure Relief
The Layla's soft side will appeal to all types of lightweight sleepers as well as to back sleepers who weigh up to 250 pounds. The thick 3'' copper gel memory foam in the comfort layer will provide them with a cozy sleep experience in addition to effective point pressure relief. The ploy foam in the transition layer can further alleviate pressure by simultaneously contouring different areas in the body through its 3-zone SMT technology.
Stomach and side sleepers who weigh more than 150 pounds and back sleepers whose weight exceeds 250 pounds won't feel supported enough by the Layla's soft side. Over-sinking will result in the accumulation of pressure leading to discomfort and pain in the hips and shoulders in side sleepers and in the thoracic spine and the lumbar spine in back and stomach sleepers respectively.
These sleepers should opt for the firm side. A much thinner comfort layer with no transition layer to mitigate the effect of the firmer support layer make the mattress less contouring with a better capacity for resisting body weight.
Motion Isolation
The Layla Memory Foam isolates motion well. Its foam layers absorb a large portion of the kinetic energy generated by sleepers movements to the extent that you'll hardly feel your partner at night even if he/she tends to move a lot. Naturally, the softer side can better isolate motion thanks to it thicker comfort layer and transition layer.
Repositioning
As can be expected from an all-foam mattress, ease of movement is not Layla's strong point. It doesn't have the bounciness a mattress with coils has. Moreover, the sinkage generated by the foam hinders sleepers' mobility.
Having said that, the Layla fares better compared to other all-foam mattresses. Its copper foam is more supportive than just regular memory foam, so sleepers will sink less and be able to change positions more easily, especially while sleeping on the firm side.
Edge Support
The Layla Memory Foam is not particularly strong on its perimeter. Sleepers won't roll off the bed upon sleeping on the edge, but they'll feel a bit unstable as a result of sagging. The Firm side has stronger edge support due to less foam in its comfort layer.
Heat Retention
Foam mattresses are more prone to retain heat than other types of mattresses, especially mattresses with a coil system which enables free flow of air.
However, the Layla has all that is required to keep sleepers cool at night. The ThermoGel cooling agent in the cover releases trapped heat. The Copper gel in the memory foam is made of small beads which interact with one another transferring heat away from sleepers' body and dispersing it across the mattress. What it practically means is that you're unlikely to wake up sweating in the middle of the night if you sleep on the Layla Memory Foam.
Frame & Foundation
The Layla Memory Foam is compatible with almost all types of foundations, bed frames and adjustable bases available on the market. If you opt for a slat bed, make sure the slats are no more than 4'' apart.
