Mattress Construction

With a height of 15'', the LXE is one of the thickest mattresses on the market. It consists of a cotton cover on top of a plant fiber layer, multiple cotton layers and two secondary and main layers of coils. The two firmness models, the medium-plush and the medium-firm, are distinguished from one another by different types of coils in the secondary layer.

The layers of the Joybed LXE

Cover: Soft and breathable cotton which wicks away warm air. Hand tufting technique is applied to add durability to the mattress' cover.

Top Layer: Breathable flame-resistant plant fiber providing protection against fire without using synthetic additives.

Comfort Layer: Three layers of soft and elastic cotton, which cushions sleepers' body increasing comfort.

Secondary Support Layer: The medium-plush model has thin and flexible nano coils and micro coils placed in between the cotton layers in the comfort layer. These coils are highly responsive to sleepers' body providing pressure relieving bounce.

The Medium-firm model has thicker low profile mini coils also inserted in between the cotton layers in the comfort layer. These coils augment the mattress' support and increase its firmness.

Main Support Layer: Individually encased coils countering sinkage and generating lift. The coils are arranged in seven zones of support targeting specific areas in sleeper's body. An added column of coils around the mattress' perimeter reinforces the edges.

Feel

The cotton-based cover and the top layer of plant fiber are highly breathable. They cool the mattress' surface and keep it dry even after long hours of sleep.

In both firmness models, the multiple cotton layers cozily cushion the body soothing the muscles and joints relieving everyday aches and pains.

The medium-plush model gives a soft feel. It's bouncy and responsive effectively conforming to body weight. The medium-plush model provides a medium feel. It's also bouncy, but compared to the softer medium-plush model, it's less conforming and more supportive.

Pressure Relief

Light and average weight side sleepers will like the LXE's medium-plush model. The soft cotton in the comfort layer will boost their comfort. The nano and micro coils in the secondary support layer will conform to their body curves mitigating pressure in their hips and shoulder. The coils in the main support layer will provide them with the stability they need to maintain a healthy sleeping position.

Side sleepers weighing more than 250 pounds will prefer the medium-firm model. The mini coils in the secondary support layer together with the coils in the main support layer will better cope with their heavy weight. The zoned coils in the main support layer will target their hips and shoulders, reduce sagging and keep their spine properly aligned

Back sleepers who weigh up to 250 pounds will feel comfortable lying on the mattress medium-firm model. Three layers of cotton will pad their lumbar back reliving pressure. The mini coils in the secondary support layer and the zoned coils in the main support layer will elevate their low and middle back preventing their spine from being thrown out of its natural alignment.

Back sleepers heavier than 250 pounds won't be supported well enough by the LXE. They'll require a more robust mattress to lift their body and keep them 'on' the bed instead on 'in' it. Joybed's LX may be a good fit for them.

Stomach sleepers usually seek a mattress firm enough to reduce sagging in the area below their rib cage. Those who weigh up to 250 pounds will get the support they need from the LXE's medium-firm model. The mini coils working in tandem with the zoned coils in the main support layer will lift their abdomen and, by doing so, will prevent the build-up of pressure in their lumbar spine allowing them to sleep comfortably avoiding pain.

Plus-size stomach sleepers will plunge too deeply lying on the LXE's medium-firm model. They should opt for a sturdier mattress designed for heavier people.

Motion Isolation

Motion Isolation isn't the LXE's strong point. Its three layers of cotton can absorb some of the kinetic energy stemming from sleepers' movements. The coils in the main support layer, being individually encased, transfer less motion compared to traditional innerspring systems.

Yet the cotton, despite being soft, isn't as contouring as foam. On the contrary, being responsive, it transfers quite a lot of motion to the coils. The two and three sets of coils in the medium-firm and medium plush models respectively intensify that motion transfer throughout the mattress.

It should be noted that the medium-plush models doesn't necessarily isolate motion better the the medium-firm model despite being softer and more conforming. This is because softer means bouncier, which in return means higher capacity for motion transfer.

Practically speaking, if your partner tends to toss and turn frequently in his/her sleep, you'll probably won't enjoy quiet nights lying on the LXE, especially if you're a light sleeper. A more contouring foam-based mattress will do a much better job impeding motion.

Repositioning

In contrast to motion isolation, ease of movement is definitely the LXE's forte. Its cotton-based comfort layer is responsive, and so it doesn't create a quicksand effect which traps sleepers in the mattress. In addition, multiple layers of coils create ample bounce keeping sleepers 'on' the mattress enabling them to move on its surface without too much effort. This makes the LXE ideal for intimate activity as couples can easily change their positions.

Obviously, the medium-plush model generates less lift and so it tends to hamper movement more than the medium-firm model especially when it comes to heavier sleepers. But compared to soft foam mattresses, the former is considerably more maneuverable.

Edge Support

The perimeter of the LXE is highly stable. A thick comfort layer of responsive cotton, a coil layer in between and a support layer with reinforced coils around the mattress' exterior provide excellent edge support. Sleepers can therefore lie away from the center and feel quite secure. That increases their potential sleep surface.

The medium-firm model offers better edge support than the medium-plush models since its secondary support layer consists of thicker and sturdier mini coils meant to deliver extra support. In contrast, the nano coils and micro coils in the medium-plush model's secondary support layer are more flexible and are mainly designed to deliver pressure reliving bounce.

Heat Retention

The LXE effectively regulates temperature. The plant fiber and cotton in its top and comfort layers are highly breathable. They provides excellent sweat-wicking keeping sleepers body dry, especially in humid areas. The mattress' multiple sets of coils enable free circulation of air, which significantly intensifies the cooling effect. In other words, the LXE is the right choice for people who tend to sleep hot.

Frame & Foundation

The LXE works well with the majority of the foundations, frame and adjustable bases available on market on condition that they're capable of supporting its weight. King and California King size mattresses need a foundation with firm center support. If you intend to place the mattress on a slat bed, make sure the slats are no more than 5'' apart. Joybed manufactures and sell two sleep platforms.

The Joybed Frame is a sturdy steel construct designed to carry foundations and boxsprings. Frames for King and California King size mattresses come with an additional center support bar for greater durability. The frame can be assembled quickly and easily with no need for tools. It's shipped in 1-2 business days and is backed by a 1-year warranty. It's offered at a uniform and affordable price of $89 for all mattress sizes.

The Joybed Foundation is crafted from solid wood fastened together by coated steel nails. It's covered by plant fiber and a non-skid poly-material to keep it immobile. Its sizes are wrapped in organic cotton fiber to protect against dust. The foundation is available in two heights of 6'' and 9''. It's shipped in 1-2 business days and comes with a 120-night trial. Its priced at $249 for all mattress sizes.

Instead, you can give the mattress another chance by ordering a topper to change its feel or replace the LXE with another Joybed mattress. You'll be charged extra or compensated based on the difference in cost.

The LXP is backed by a 10-year warranty which covers manufacturing defects in materials or workmanship and impressions on the surface greater than 1.5''. The warranty doesn't cover bent border lines, changing firmness preferences and accidental damage including tears, spills, stains and burning marks.

Ill-treating the mattress (e.g. folding or bending it and cleaning it with chemical agents), placing it on an insufficiently supportive foundation and removing the law or trade label may void the warranty.

The Bottom Line

The LXE's thick cotton-based comfort layer and multiple sets of coils make it both cushy and responsive. Its two firmness levels of medium-plush and medium-firm enable sleepers to choose between a mattress designed to effectively conforms to their body providing pressure relief and a mattress which is more supportive. And while making this choice, they can follow their green agenda thanks to the LXE's organic and eco-friendly composition.
