Mattress Construction

The LX is 10'' thick. It has 5 layers including cover. These layers are made of natural and organic cotton, plant fiber and wool on top of steel coils. Together, these materials keep the mattress cool while providing cushioning and firm support.

Cover: Lightweight and soft hand-quilted organic cotton. The cotton is highly breathable facilitating moisture wicking.

Top layer: Flame resistant plant fiber protecting the mattress against fire without chemical and synthetic additives.

Comfort Layer: Two layers of soft and resilient cotton with a layer wool in between them. The cotton and wool are cushy, organic, hypoallergenic, anti-bacterial and heat wicking.

Support Layer: individually encased steel coils delivering improved supportive bounce, elevating sleepers body and increasing the mattress' durability.

Feel

The breathable materials the XL is made of keep the mattress well aerated, cool and dry even after long hours of sleep.

On the firmness scale, the LX is firm, which makes it stiffer than the average. Due to the the lack foam, the mattress doesn't contour the body. Instead, the cotton and wool in its comfort layer give a moderate cushy feel. The coils in the support layer add some bounce to that feel. They generate lift and reduce sinkage increasing sleepers' stability by keeping them 'on' the mattress instead of 'in' it. 

Pressure Relief

Side sleepers of all weights won't feel comfortable lying on the LX. Sleepers who weigh more than 250 pound will be well supported by it, but together with their less heavy counterparts, they'll suffer from pressure in the sensitive areas in their body, the hips and shoulder in particular, due to the mattress' lack of contouring. The cotton and wool, as cushy as they may be, cannot replaces the conforming sensation of foam or the bouncy feel of latex when it comes to relieving pressure.

Back sleepers who weigh less than 150 pounds won't like the LX. It'll be too stiff for them, which may lead to discomfort and even pain.

In contrast, back sleepers who weigh more 150 pounds and especially those heavier than 250 pounds will get along fine with the mattress. The soft cotton and wool in the comfort layer will cushion their lumbar and thoracic back mitigating pressure. The coils will elevate these areas averting sinkage. By doing so, they'll enable these sleepers to maintain a healthy position throughout the night.

Lightweight stomach sleepers won't be contoured enough by the firm LX. Pressure build-up in their abdomen will result in muscle strain in their lumbar back, and they'll be forced to switch to side or back sleeping.

It's a whole different story when it comes to average and heavyweight stomach sleepers. They'll highly benefit from the responsive cotton and wool which, together with the coils, will elevate the area below their rib cage and prevent their spine from being thrown out of its natural alignment enabling them a healthy and comfortable night"s sleep. 

Motion Isolation

Motion isolation isn't the LX's main strength. Although the cotton and wool in its comfort layer can absorb some of sleepers' movements, they're quite limited in their ability to hamper motion in comparison to foam. The coils, despite being individually encased with lower capacity for motion transfer, will vibrate when hit by the kinetic energy generated by sleepers' movements.

Practically speaking, most people will enjoy quiet nights sleeping on the LX. This, however, can't be said about light sleepers who tend to be disturbed every time their partner tosses and turns. They should seek a more contouring mattress, which can better isolate motion.

Repositioning

The LX enables sleepers to move on its surface without exerting too much effort. Despite being cushy, the cotton and wool in the comfort layer don't cause too much sinkage to the extent of trapping sleepers in bed and impeding movement. The coils on their part also make it easy for sleepers to change their positions thanks to the supportive bounce they deliver.

Edge Support

The LX provides excellent edge support. The responsive cotton and wool reduce sagging around the mattress perimeter while the lift generated by the coils further reinforces it. Stable edges allow sleepers to lie away from the center as they don't have to be worried about falling out of bed. Consequently, they have a larger sleeping space.

Heat Retention

Temperature regulation is the LX's most noticeable advantage. The Queen, King and California King size bed frames are supplemented with a center support bar for extra durability. The Frame can be assembled easily with no need for tools. The Joybed Foundation is crafted from solid wood fastened together by coated steel nails. Its sizes are wrapped in organic cotton fiber. It's covered by non-skid poly-material to keep the bed in place and protect against dust. In between the cover and the wooden frame, there is a layer of plant fiber for quiet support. The Foundation is available in two heights of 6'' or 9''. It's shipped for free in 1-2 business days and comes with a 120-night trial. It's sold at a uniform price of $249 for all mattress sizes.

Return & Warranty

The LX comes with a 120-night trial and a break-in period of 30 nights. If you're not satisfied after sleeping on the mattress for 30 nights and no more than 120 nights, you can replace it with one of the other mattresses Joybed offers and you'll be charged or compensated for the difference in cost. You can also return the mattress and get a full refund minus a $139 processing fee and a 10% restocking fee (not exceeding $250) associated with the returning process. There is a third option: you can purchase a complimentary topper to adjust the mattress' feel.

The LX is backed by a 10-year warranty which covers manufacturing defects in materials or workmanship and impressions on the surface deeper than 1.5''. It doesn't cover firmness preferences of the product, stains, soilage or burns and bent border wires.

The warranty may be invalidated if the mattress is ill-treated (e.g. bending or folding it, using cleaning fluids and smoking in bed), placed on an a foundation which is not sufficiently supportive or if the law or trade label is removed.
