Mattress Construction

The Moonlight is a hybrid mattress constructed of several layers of dynamic foams and a layer of individually wrapped coils to maximize support and pressure relief while maintaining a good deal of motion isolation and heat wicking.

The layers of the Helix Moonlight mattress

Cover: Each Helix mattress comes with a soft stretchy cover specially designed by Helix. It is optimized for airflow and can be removed, though Helix advises against this.

Layer 1: The comfort layer is made out of a special latex-foam hybrid alternative, designed to react and contour to your body. It has a soft feel and fast recovery.

Layer 2: This transition layer providing ergonomic support and soft cushioning. It has lower indention force deflection (IFD) for further sinkage and body contouring.

Layer 3: This base layer is made out of hundreds of individually wrapped coils that help cradle your body while also limiting motion transfer. It features a reinforced perimeter to provide better edge support.

Layer 4: Underneath the coils, there's a layer of aptly named DuraDense foam that provides base support and durability to the entire mattress, while protecting the coils from the foundation of the bed.

Feel

The Helix Moonlight has a very soft feel and is perfect for anyone who prefers their mattress to be plush and cozy. It has noticeable sinkage, but not enough to make you feel trapped and unable to move, thanks to its coiled springs. You definitely feel like you're sleeping on this mattress rather than in it. It also has quite a bit of bounce due to this.

Pressure Relief

Thanks to the way that the Moonlight is constructed, it offers a fair amount of pressure relief, especially if you're sleeping on your back or stomach. It does, however, tend to sink too much if applied with too much weight since it is so soft. If you are heavyset, you may want to consider purchasing the Helix Plus instead, since this mattress won't offer enough support for you.

Motion Isolation

Since the Helix Moonlight features pocketed coils, which are springs that are individually wrapped in separate fabric pockets, the mattress offers a good amount of motion isolation. This is fairly standard for a hybrid mattress, and is one of the strengths of such mattresses. If your partner tends to move around a lot at night, they way the Moonlight is constructed will ensure that you'll barely feel them or even hear them, since the coils are extremely quiet.

Edge Support

The Helix Moonlight mattress has a reinforced coil perimeter to provide strong edge support. Even if you sleep on the very edge of it, you'll never feel like you're about to fall off of it.

Repositioning

The Moonlight mattress is springy enough to allow for easy transition between sleeping or sex positions. The degree of conforming and sink provided by the soft foam layers of the Moonlight do hamper your ability to move on top of it, though, so the end result is fairly average.

If you and your partner are looking for a mattress that is more suited for intimate activities, then you should consider a firmer Helix mattress, such as the Helix Dawn.

Heat Retention

The Helix Moonlight's heat wicking capabilities are overall great, but that's mainly thanks to the fact that it is a hybrid mattress with a lot of air inside it to help with heat dissipation. The breathable cover also helps direct heat away from your body, though the soft, hugging foam of the mattress keeps it from being truly top-tier in this regard.

Frame & Foundation

Helix advises purchasers to place their mattresses on a foundation. If you lack one, you can purchase it along with a frame from the Helix website. The Helix foundation is made of birch wood and is upholstered with woven fabric. It can be built and broken down in roughly 2-3 minutes, and, like the mattress, is completely made in the USA. The Helix foundation costs $249.

The frame, while mostly decorative, features hardened steel with fiberglass-infused resins to provide sturdy and durable support for the bed. It can support up to 2,500 lbs with nearly zero motion transfer or noise, and takes about the same amount of time to assemble. The frame fits most bolt-on headboards, and costs $150.

The foundation and frame aren't always available for all mattress sizes.

Helix LUXE Upgrade

You can upgrade your mattress to its LUXE version for an additional $400-$900 (depending on the size of the mattress). This will add several features to your mattress, such as a zoned lumbar support, an extra breathable cover, and an additional comfort layers for those of you who prefer more cushioning. A LUXE mattress also features a premium quilted pillow top for more plush comfort without added sinkage. This cover is extra soft to the touch and has enhanced breathability, providing best-in-class heat and moisture wicking.

The Helix Moonlight LUXE mattress

Additionally, the LUXE upgrade replaces the standard base layer of coils with an 8" individually pocketed coil layer that features more advanced zoning technology for better lumbar support (the coils underneath your shoulders are softer to provide more sink, while the coils under your hips are firmer to help cradle your body and align your spine). This layer features more springs overall, and so also ends up feeling more supportive in general.

The Helix Moonlight LUXE is 2" higher than the regular Helix Moonlight due to an added layer of Gel Visco memory foam for pressure relief.

Additional Details

Helix mattresses are made in the USA, and are hand-assembled and custom-built. All Helix mattresses are also up to CertiPUR-US and OEKO-TEX standards, and so are 100% certified to be free of harmful substances.

In addition, Helix offers a discount (usually around $100-$200) off all of its mattresses, and gifts mattress purchasers two free Helix Dream pillows, which are high-quality adjustable down alternative pillows, perfect for those who prefer non-allergenic pillows.

Shipping & Delivery

All Helix products are shipped for free around the US. The shipments arrive 1-2 weeks after purchasing the selected mattress. Once a mattress is purchased, customers receive a confirmation and an itemized receipt to their email.

Returns & Warranty

Once you receive your Helix Moonlight mattress, you'll have 100 nights to try it out. If you choose to return it, you can do so before that time has elapsed to get a full refund. Helix requires that you at least try the mattress for a minimum of 30 days in order to ensure that you gave it a fair shot.

All standard Helix mattresses come with a 10 year warranty. The warranty for the LUXE mattress is 15 years. The warranty is only covered for those who reside in the US, and can only be claimed by the person whose name is on the receipt. The warranty doesn't cover any damage to the mattress by your neglect or misuse. In a case where the warranty is accepted, you will be provided the same mattress or a similar, yet pricier one (such as the Moonlight LUXE if you purchased the standard Moonlight mattress) in case the mattress is no longer in stock. You'll be charged for the shipping and handling of the returned mattress. Helix will reimburse you for up to $100 for shipping costs and will not charge for the delivery of the new mattress.

An Up-Close Look at The Helix Moonlight

Bottom Line

The Helix Moonlight is an excellent choice for front and back sleepers that aren't too heavy, prefer plush mattresses and don't want to spend an arm and a leg on a good night's sleep. Its great for couples thanks to its good motion isolation and feel, and because it can fit almost any sleeper as long as they don't weigh more than 250 lb.

The Helix Moonlight has so many good qualities that it's hard to not just give it a pass on all its weaknesses, but regardless; if you seem to fit the demographic of people who this mattress is suited for, you'll probably consider this the best purchase you've made in years.
