The Avocado Vegan Mattress Review
The Avocado Vegan is a hybrid mattress constructed from an elastic Dunlop latex and robust steel coils. It's bouncy and supportive and, therefore, highly suitable for heavier sleepers. Like all of Avocado's mattresses, it's made of 100% organic and sustainable materials. Unlike the company's other mattresses, it doesn't contain wool or any other animal-based-products, which makes it a good choice for vegan sleepers.
* Prices don't include the pillow-top. Adding it to the mattress requires an extra payment of $400 for the Twin, XL Twin and Full mattresses; $500 for the Queen mattress and $600 for the King and California mattresses.

Mattress Construction
The Vegan consists of a cotton cover fabric and a thick latex-based comfort layer on top of a coil system. Purchasers may opt for a pillow-top, which adds plushness and softness to the mattress.
Pillow-top (optional): 2'' of supple latex making the mattress much cushier.
Cover: A fabric made of soft and breathable cotton assisting in moisture wicking.
Comfort Layer: 2" of hyper-elastic Dunlop latex giving the mattress a cushy feel while at the same time making it bouncy. The latex has a perforated structure, which enables free flow of air keeping the mattress cool.
Support Layer: 1,414 8'' pocketed steel coils generating lift and preventing sinkage. The coils are individually tuned in three gauges (14, 16 and 17 gauge) and grouped in 5 zones to provide targeted support for different areas in the body.
Base Layer: 1'' of hardened latex functioning as the mattress' base.
Feel
The cover fabric is smooth and gentle. The breathable cotton keeps the mattress' surface cool to the touch.
The mattress is highly bouncy thanks to the springy latex in the comfort layer. The robust coil system makes sleepers feel highly supported with minimum sinkage.
The pillow top adds some plushness to the mattress making it much softer and cozier mitigating body pressure and soothing the muscles.
Pressure Relief
Low and average weight side sleepers may find the vegan to be too firm and incapable of relieving pressure in their hips and shoulders. Adding the pillow-top will provide better cradling and help them get rid of excessive pressure.
Heavyweight side sleepers will highly benefit from the ergonomic construction of the mattress. The zoned support will target their hips and shoulders, curb sinking and help them maintain stable posture.
The Vegan may be too firm for back sleepers who weigh less than 150 pounds. They should opt for the pillow-top which will provide them with the necessary extra cushioning.
Back sleepers who weigh more than 150 pounds, especially the ones whose weight exceeds 250 pounds, will highly appreciate the Vegan's firmness, which will prevent them from over-sinking into the mattress and suffering from back pain as a result of that. The coils zoned system will distribute their weight evenly while supporting their lumbar area keeping their spine properly aligned.
Lightweight stomach sleepers may suffer from too much pressure in their abdomen area and lumbar spine due to lack of cushioning. They'll need the pillow-top to counter the Vegan's firmness.
Heavier stomach sleepers, on the other hand will enjoy the right combination of pressure reliving bounciness and strong support, which will keep them on the mattress instead of sagging into it.
Motion Isolation
The Vegan's body-responsive latex in the comfort layer and the coils below transfer much of the motion generated by sleepers' movements.
On the bright side, because the Dunlop latex is softer and more elastic than regular latex and the coils are individually wrapped and arranged in five separate zones, the Vegan has a better capacity for isolating motion compared to other hybrid latex and coil mattresses. Moreover, the pillow-top makes the mattress softer and further reduces motion transfer.
Put otherwise, the Vegan will be able to absorb your partner's minor movements at night, but if he/she sleeps restlessly or if you're a light sleeper, you should go for a foam mattress which can more effectively isolate motion.
Repositioning
What the Vegan lacks in motion isolation it makes up for in ease of movement. The bounciness provided by the latex and the lift generated by the 1,414 coils make sure moving on the surface of the mattress and changing sleep positions don't require much effort even for heavier sleepers.
The pillow-top reduces the mattress' firmness at the expense of easy repositioning, but this is the trade off you'll have to make between increased cushioning and ease of movement.
Edge Support
The Vegan is highly stable on its perimeter. The buoyant latex and the robust coils in the support layer prevent sagging even when it comes to XL sleepers. Reinforced edges allow these sleepers to utilize the entire surface of the mattress with no need to move towards the center.
Heat Retention
The Vegan is a good choice for people who tend to sleep hot. The breathable cotton in the cover helps draw perspiration away from the body. The aerated latex and the coil system allow free flow of air in and out of the mattress reducing heat retention.
The softer pillow top traps more heat as a result of sinking. Yet, since it's made of latex, characterized by relatively low capacity for heat retention, sleepers will still not suffer from overheating at night.
