Mattress Construction
The Eco Organic Crib has two sides. One side is intended for babies up to 1-year old. It's firmer providing these very young sleepers with the orthopedic support they require for healthy growth. The other side is for 1 to 4 year old toddlers and is a bit softer combining support and coziness.
Cover: Tightly quilted organic cotton on top of a thin layer of organic wool. Both materials are soft and breathable reducing heat retention.
The Infant Side
Comfort & Support Layer: Elastic organic Dunlop latex providing bounciness while generating lift. The latex is infused with coconut husk fiber adding firmness and durability to the mattress.
The Toddler Side
Comfort & Support Layer: Softer Dunlop latex on top of organic cotton for added breathability and cushioning.
Feel
The Organic Crib is characterized by two types of sleep experiences due to its two-sided design.
The Infant side is firmer. It generates lift with minimal sinking providing the stability babies need in the first months of life. The toddler side is still highly supportive yet softer and bouncier, giving a balanced feel of coziness and stability.
The cover of both sides makes the surface of the mattress cool to the touch thanks to the breathable cotton and wool it consists of.
Safety and Certifications
The organic cotton and wool which cover the Organic Crib are highly breathable and reduce the risk of SIDS.
Equally important, all the materials used to manufacture the Organic Crib are 100% organic. The cotton and wool are GOTS certified. The Latex and the coconut husk fiber are GOLS certified. The mattress' layers are hand-tufted without the use of toxic solvents or water-based adhesives.
The Organic Crib is GREENGUARD Gold certified and Formaldehyde Free certified by UL Environment, which means it follows strict emission standards for minimizing chemical exposure and pollutants, for example volatile organic compounds, formaldehyde and phthalates. The mattress is also MADE SAFE certified indicating it's scientifically tested to make sure it doesn't contain ingredients which are harmful to human health and to the environment.
Accident Proofing
The Dunlop latex in the Organic Crib is more elastic and durable than Talalay latex commonly used in the mattress industry. The coconut husk fiber embedded in the Dunlop latex is resilient and resistant to rotting increasing the mattress lifespan. Chances are that you'll be able to pass the Organic Crib on to the next baby in the family with no need for buying a new mattress.
Since the Eco Organic Crib doesn't contain synthetic chemical coatings and inorganic and non-breathable materials, such as vinyl and plastic, it's not waterproof. What you can do is purchase the additional crib mattress protector for $59. It's made of 0.5'' of organic cotton. Apart from adding plushness to the mattress, it functions as another layer of protection against wetness and dirt. The cover is washable and easy to attach.
Growth Accommodation
Newborns and babies up to one year old require a hard sleeping platform to enable proper spinal development. Equally important, a firm mattress impervious to sagging is essential for reducing the risk of SIDS the moment the baby is able to roll onto their stomach during sleep. The infant side of the Organic Crib provides the necessary level of firmness to accommodate for young babies' physiological needs.
Older children still require a supportive mattress but this mattress also has to be cushy enough to prevent the alleviation of pressure points in their body. The supple latex and the extra layer of soft cotton on the Organic Crib's toddler side offer this exact balance of firmness and comfort.
Edge Support
The Eco Organic Crib's buoyant latex strengthened by the coconut husk fiber makes the mattress' edges on the infant side highly stable. Stable edges become important the moment babies start to move during sleep.
The bouncy and responsive latex in the toddler side is firm enough to prevent sagging and support children's weight while sleeping on the mattress' perimeter.
Heat Retention
The Organic Crib is a good choice for young sleepers living in hot and humid climates. The organic cotton and wool are highly breathable and effectively draw perspiration away from the body. Latex is more aerated than foam and, therefore, doesn't retain much heat.
The softer and plusher toddler side trap more heat than the firmer infant side, but it doesn't make the mattress significantly hotter.
