Amerisleep AS5 Hybrid Mattress Review

The Amerisleep AS5 is the last in a line of mattresses which include the AS1, aS2, as3 and AS4. The lower the number is, the thinner and firmer the mattress gets. Therefore, the AS5 is the thickest and softest off all and is, therefore, designed to provide maximum cushioning, pressure relieving contouring and motion isolation. The AS5 is available in an all foam version and a hybrid foam and coils version. In this review, we plan to discuss the latter.

Pros & Cons

Mattress Construction

The AS5 Hybrid is 14'' thick. It consists of 3 layers of different types of foam fulfilling various functions from adding cushioning to supporting the mattress. An additional layer of steel coils generates lift and bounce and improves support.

Cover: Gentle and breathable cotton and polyester fabric facilitating moisture wicking.

Layer 1: 3'' of soft 10 ILD Bio-Pur memory foam providing enhanced pressure relieving comfort. The foam has an open-cell structure, which reduces heat retention.

Layer 2: 2'' of ultra-conforming and cushy 11 ILD ActiveFlex poly foam designed for improved contouring.

Layer 3: 7'' medium-firm 16 gauge individually wrapped steel coils generating bounce and support and adding durability to the mattress. The coils are reinforced in the perimeter for better edge support.

Layer 4: 2'' of high-density 30 ILD poly-foam supporting the coils as they compress and increasing the mattress structural integrity.

Feel

The soft and breathable cover fabric of the AS5 Hybrid gives a smooth satin-like feel. It also keeps the surface of the mattress ventilated and dry.

The AS5 Hybrid is characterized by a sound balance of contouring and support. The Bio-Pur memory foam in the first layer slowly snaps back into place once compressed and so closely envelops the body soothing the muscle and joints. The cushy and sinkable ActiveFlex poly foam in the layer below enables a cozy melting-into-the bed sensation.

At the same time, the two bottom layers of coils and hardened foam counter the sinkage generated by the upper soft foam layers with bounce and support making sleepers feel stable lying on the mattress.

Pressure Relief

The AS5 Hybrid will appeal to low and average weight side sleepers. The enhanced pressure relief provided by the two upper layers of contouring foam will target their hips and shoulders mitigating body aches. The coils in the third layer will deliver enough bounce to prevent excess sagging assisting these sleepers in maintaining a healthy posture.

Some heavy-weight side-sleepers will find the AS5 hybrid adequately supportive thanks to the interaction between its coil system and the dense foam in the 4^th layer, which generates good support. Others, especially those whose weight is close to or more than 300 pounds, will need the firmer AS4 or AS3 models.

The AS5 Hybrid is a good fit for back sleepers who weigh up to 250 pounds. The slow responding Bio-Pur memory foam will cradle their back reducing pressure in their thoracic and lumbar spine. The soft ActiveFlex poly foam will enable them to enjoy a pleasant sinking sensation while the coils will provide them with the necessary bounce and support to make sure this sinking won't throw their spine out of its natural alignment.

Back sleepers whose weight exceeds 250 pounds will need a more robust mattress. The AS5 Hybrid's medium-soft firmness can't give them the support they need. The coils won't be able to generate sufficient lift to counter the sinking resulted from the combination of 5'' of soft foam in the two upper layers and their heavier body.

The AS5 Hybrid works well for lightweight stomach sleepers. The cushy foam in the 1^st and 2^nd layers will wrap their abdomen reducing pressure in their lower back area. In addition, the mattress will be able to carry their weight without causing too much sinking.

Stomach sleepers who weigh more than 150 pounds will need a more supportive mattress. They should check out the AS1, AS2 and AS3 models.

Motion Isolation

The AS5 Hybrid performs exceptionally well when it comes to motion isolation. Its thick two upper layers of contouring foam absorb most of the kinetic energy created by sleepers' movements making sure it stays on their side of the bed.

The AS5 Hybrid's coils are individually wrapped. What it means is that the interaction between them is reduced, which also significantly reduces their capacity for transferring motion.

Making a long story short, you'll probably won't be disturbed by your partner's movements even if he/she is a restless sleeper.

Repositioning

How easy it'll be for you to maneuver on the AS5 Hybrid's surface is a function of your body weight. Sleepers who weigh up to 250 pounds will enjoy relative ease of movement thanks to the lift generated by the coils and the support given by the hardened poly foam in the 4^th layer.

Plus-size sleepers, on the other hand, will have to exert greater effort in changing sleep positions or getting out of bed due to excess sinking. It can be quite tiring if they tend to move a lot at night.

Edge Support

The AS5 Hybrid provides good edge support. True, the 5'' pliable foam in the first two layers generates considerable sinking, but the coils are reinforced in the perimeter and help the mattress support sleepers who lie away from the center.

As in the case of repositioning, XL sleepers may experience greater sagging sleeping close to the perimeter. They'll require a sturdier mattress with better edge support.

Heat Retention

The AS5 Hybrid is well-equipped to reduce heat retention. Its breathable cover facilitates moisture wicking. The open-cell technology used to manufacture the Bio-Pur memory foam helps the mattress draw heat away from sleepers' body and disperse it. Finally, the coils enable free circulation of air, which increases the cooling effect.

All in all, the AS5 Hybrid will do well for people who tend to sleep hot or live in hot and humid areas.

Frame and Foundation

The AS5 Hybrid is compatible with almost all the frames, foundations and adjustable bases you'll find on the market on condition that can carry its weight. If you plan to use a slat bed, you'll have to make sure the slats are no more than 2.75'' apart. Amerisleep offers its own manufactured sleep platforms.

The Platform Bed Frame has a modern look. It comes with thick hardwood slats and offers solid center support curbing sinkage and increasing the mattress' lifespan. The Amerisleep Adjustable Bed+ has a variety of features, among which are full body massage, head and foot articulation (60 degrees max head tilt and 35 degrees max foot tilt), wireless remote, Alexa, Google Home and mobile app controls, three preset setting and under-bed Led lighting. Amerisleep was founded in 2010. It manufactures its AS5 Hybrid as well as all its other mattresses and bedroom products in Rancho Cucamonga, California.

The company's mattresses are CertiPUR-US certified, which guarantees the foam they're made of doesn't contain ozone depleters, PBDEs, TDCPP or TCEP (“Tris”) flame retardants, formaldehyde, phthalates, heavy metals and any other materials which may risk sleepers' health or harm the environment.

Amerisleep follows stringent guidelines for reducing emissions of volatile organic compounds. In addition, in order to curtail carbon footprint, the Bio-Pur memory foam in the AS5 Hybrid contains plant-based oils instead of petrochemicals widely used in the mattress industry.

Shipping and Delivery

The AS5 will be delivered to your doorstep wrapped in plastic, rolled and compressed in a box in 7-10 business days from the moment you issued your order. You'll have to carry the box to your designated room, unpack the mattress and set it up by yourself. Amerisleep doesn't provide white glove delivery.

The mattress will be shipped anywhere within the conterminous United States at no cost. Amerisleep doesn't ship its products to Alaska, Hawaii and Canada. You can hire the services of a third-party delivery company, but you'll have to pay extra for its services.

Returns & Warranty

The AS5 comes with a 100-night trial and a break in period of 30 days. In other words, in case you're not satisfied with the mattress, you can return it and be entitled to a full refund after you slept on it for no less than 30 nights and no more than 100 nights.

The mattress is sold with a 20-year warranty. In the course of the first 10 years, Amerisleep will replace or fix it at no additional charges. After 10 years the warranty becomes prorated, which means that you'll be required to pay 50% of the mattress' original price as well as shipping, labor and cover replacement costs.

The warranty extends to the original purchaser only. It covers manufacturing defects, such as cracks in the foam and impressions on the surface deeper than 1'' as long as they don't appear on the edges and in the corners.

The warranty doesn't cover natural wear-and-tear, stains, tears and burning marks. It'll be annulled if the law tag is removed or if the mattress is placed on an improper foundation, especially one that doesn't provide sufficient support. 

The Bottom Line

If you're looking for a soft and highly contouring mattress, which is also springy and supportive, the AS5 Hybrid is definitely a good choice for you. Its thick and conforming foam will effectively mitigate pressure points in your body while its coil system will provide you with the support you need to feel stable and secure.

The mattress has additional advantages, which are crucial to your sleep experience. They include excellent motion isolation, good edge support and high capacity for temperature regulation.

The flip side is that the medium-soft AS5 Hybrid might be inadequately supportive for plus-size sleepers. These sleepers should look for a firmer mattress which can better handle their heavier body.
